Abstract: A process for the production of coated articles having an outer layer of polyamide by polymerization of lactams with an alkaline polymerization initiator and a polymerization activator comprises surrounding a shaped article composed of a material which is dimensionally stable at temperatures up to at least 300 DEG C. with a melt of one or more lactams with six to twelve carbon atoms containing an alkaline polymerization initiator and a substituted urea, thiourea or urethane as activator, and polymerizing the lactam. Specified lactams are S -caprolactam, oenanthic lactum, caprylic lactam, lauric lactam, 4-isopropyl-S -caprolactam and 3- methyl-S -caprolactam. Specified initiators are alkali and alkaline earth metals and the oxides, hydrooxides, hydrides, carbonates, alcoholates and lactam salts thereof. Suitable polymerization activators are disclosed in Specifications 900,150 and 900,151. Cross-linking agents e.g. methylene-bis-caprolactam and fillers e.g. metal powder or graphite may be incorporated in the melt. Specified core materials are iron, brass, aluminium and ceramics. In the examples-(1) a shaped article preheated to 150 DEG C. is dipped into (a) a melt of caprylic lactam and sodium methylate and (b) a melt of caprylic lactam and bis-(caprylic lactam-N-carboxylic acid)-hexamethylene diamide-1:6 and suspended in a heating oven to complete polymerization and (2) sheet iron is preheated to 150 DEG C., dipped into a melt of S -caprolactam, caprylic lactam, potassium and bis-(caprolactam-N-carboxylic acid) hexamethylene diamide -1:6 and the lactams polymerized at 180 DEG C.ALSO:A process for the production of coated articles having an outer layer of polyamide by polymerization of lactams with an alkaline polymerization initiator and a polymerization activator comprises surrounding a shaped article composed of a material which is dimensionally stable at temperatures up to at least 300 DEG C. with a melt of one or more lactams with six to twelve carbon atoms containing an alkaline polymerization initiator and a substituted urea, thiourea or urethane as activator, and polymerizing the lactam. Abstract: A process for the polymerization of lactams having from 4 to 12 ring carbon atoms in the presence of an alkaline reaction initiator and a polymerization activator comprises using as the polymerization activator a substituted urethane which is capable of being dissolved undecomposed in the lactam at the polymerization temperature, having the general formula where R1, R2 and R3 represent a hydrogen atom or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, which may be substituted by fluorine or ether groups, or in which R1 and R2 together represent a divalent acryl radical of the general formula -CH2-(CH2)n-CO where n is an integer from 3 to 11, X is oxygen, sulphur or > N-R4 wherein R4 is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical as defined above, or in which R1 has the meanings defined above and R2 and/or R3 represent the radicals where Y is a divalent and X a trivalent hydrocarbon radical with from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, which may be substituted by fluorine or ether groups, and X, R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above. Specified lactams are pyrrolidone, piperidone, caprolactam, oenanthic lactam, caprylic lactam and lauric lactam. Many activators are specified. In the examples:- (1) caprylic lactam is polymerized in the presence of 1,6-hexamethylene-N,N1-bis-ethylurethane and a caprylic lactam-potassium hydroxide reaction product; (2) caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of potassium and 1-methyl-phenylene-2,4-bis-N,N1-benzylurethane and (3) caprylic lactam is polymerized in the presence of potassium and p,p1-phenylene-bis-N,N1-phenylurethane.
