    Abstract: The invention relates to ferromagnetic chromium dioxide crystals which are particularly suitable as magnetic pigments for magnetic recording media and which are stabilized by sparingly water-soluble metal compounds whose cations form sparingly water-soluble metal chromates (such as lead hydroxide, barium phosphate, lead silicate and calcium sulfate) applied to, and particularly precipitated onto, the surface thereof, and to a process for their production.

    Abstract: Melamine is made by heating urea, and/or its thermal decomposition products, at 300-450 DEG C. in the presence of added ammonia or gas containing ammonia and a catalyst comprising aluminium oxide which has been prepared by calcining bohmite, bayerite, hydrargyllite or a mixture thereof at 700-1000 DEG C. The added ammonia may be in the form of the off-gas containing CO2 which is obtained after removing melamine from the reaction gases. The catalyst may be regenerated by treatment with ammonia at elevated temperatures. The process is effected in a continuous manner. The examples relate to a catalyst obtained by calcining a mixture of bohmite and bayerite.

    Abstract: Compounds of formula Al.R(OR1)X where R represents C1-C3 alkyl, OR1 an alkoxy or aryloxy radical with up to 20 carbon atoms and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine are prepared by reacting an aluminium sesquihalide with an aluminium alcoholate or phenolate in stoichiometric proportions. Alcoholates and phenolates specified include those of methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, hexanol, octanol, dodecyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, phenol, cresol and naphthol. The reaction is preferably carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. a halogenated hydrocarbon (carbon tetrachloride) or an aromatic hydrocarbon (benzene, toluene or xylene), and in the absence of air and moisture. The products may be used as reducing agents and polymerisation catalysts.
