Aromatic hydrocarbons are recovered from hydrocarbon mixtures containing aromatic and paraffinic hydrocarbons with or without olefins and naphthenes by a selective extraction process (e.g. liquid-liquid extraction or extractive distillation) in which the solvent is an aliphatic dicarboxylic imide, which may be substituted on the N-atom by an alkoxy or esterified hydroxy group. The solvent may contain up to 30% water and/or other additives, e.g. N- substituted pyrrolidones, piperazines, polyhydric alcohols, urea, and urea derivatives. In a liquid-liquid extraction process a backflow of a hydrocarbon solvent may be used, e:g. propane, butane, pentane, hexane, or iso-octane. A variety of mineral oil fractions which may be treated is mentioned, and the process is exemplified by a liquid-liquid extraction process in which a mixture of benzene, cyclohexane, cyclohexene, and n-hexane is introduced into the middle of a sieve plate column, N-hydroxyethyl succinimide acetic ester as the top, and iso-octane at the bottom. Raffinate from the top of the column, after removal of iso-octane, contains less than 1 % benzene; and extract from the bottom of the column, after removal of the imide solvent, contains 99À6% benzene.

    Abstract: A process for separating, by means of a selective solvent, a mixture of C4-hydrocarbons which contains some hydrocarbons which are more soluble in the selective solvent and some which are less soluble therein, in which process the hydrocarbon mixture is separated, in an extractive distillation zone, into a top product which contains the less soluble hydrocarbons and an extract which contains the more soluble hydrocarbons and the selective solvent, the extract, taken off as the bottom product, is subjected to a flash evaporation and the resulting vapor component of the extract is recycled to the extractive distillation zone while the liquid phase remaining after the flash evaporation is fed to a solvent recovery zone, in which the liquid phase obtained from the flash evaporation is separated into a product containing the hydrocarbons and, as the bottom product, the selective solvent which has been freed from the hydrocarbons, the resulting selective solvent is recycled to the extractive distillation zone and the product which is obtained from the solvent recovery zone and contains the hydrocarbons is partially or completely recycled to the extractive distillation zone, after increasing the pressure in a compression zone, in which process the extract taken off the extractive distillation zone is brought, prior to the flash evaporation to a higher pressure than the pressure in the extractive distillation zone and thereafter the extract which is under this higher pressure is heated, in a heat exchange zone, by indirect heat exchange with the selective solvent obtained as the bottom product from the solvent recovery zone, and the heated extract is subsequently let down, in the flash evaporation, to a pressure which is at least equal to the pressure in the extractive distillation zone and is higher than the pressure in the solvent recovery zone.

    Abstract: of the disclosure: A process for isolating a conjugated diolefin from a C4- or C5-hydrocarbon mixture containing the diolefin, by single-stage or multi-stage extractive distillation using a selective solvent, wherein the selective solvent is a solvent mixture which comprises (a) from 50 to 98 percent by weight of an N-alkyl-substituted lower aliphatic acid amide or of an N-alkyl-substituted alicyclic acid amide having 5 ring members and (b) from 2 to 50 percent by weight of an aliphatic ether boiling at from 30.degree.C to 200.degree. of the general formula R-O-R', where the aliphatic radical R is a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms and the aliphatic radical R' is a hydrocarbon radical of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, or a dialkyl ether of a dihydric alcohol boiling at from 30.degree.C to 200.degree.C, of the general formula R1-¢OCH2-CHR-!nOR2, where R is hydrogen or CH3, R1 and R2 are each a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and n is an integer from 1 to 3, or an alicyclic ether boiling at from 50.degree.C to 125.degree.C.
