Abstract: A medical fluid control system (10) is in the form of a medical line-set adapted to deliver a medication from a container (20) to a patient. The line-set has a tubing (12) having a MEMS element (14) attached thereto. In a preferred embodiment, the MEMS element (14) is a MEMS pump (14). The tubing (12) has a first end (16) that is connected to the container (20) and a second end (18) that is connected to the patient. The MEMS pump (14) can be controlled by an external controller (38) that is operably connected to the MEMS pump (14) to deliver medication from the container (20), through the tubing (12), and to the patient.

Abstract: A medical treatment administration system 610 for delivering a medical treatment to a patient 618. The system 610 has a medical device 612 disposed in a first location, an electronic processor 628 coupled to the medical device 612, a sensor 616 coupled to the processor 628, and a remote controller 646 disposed at a second location remote from the first location. The remote controller 646 has an input device to control operation of the electronic processor 628. The sensor 616 receives one or more signals which it transfers 624 to the processor 628. The signals can be derived from the patient's physiological condition and/or the environment of the patient. The processor 628 receives the signals and performs a calculation 630 of the signal. Based on the result of the calculation, the processor 628 regulates the distribution of medical treatment to the patient 618 over a period of time.

Abstract: A fluid delivery system having a closed-loop control process for delivering a medical fluid to a patient. A fluid infusion system includes a pump for delivering a fluid to a patient via an administration tube. A flow sensor associated with the administration tube provides an indication of the actual flow rate of fluid in the administration tube. Such a flow sensor may comprise a positive displacement flow sensor constructed using micro-fabrication and/or micro-molding techniques. A reader reads the actual flow rate signal and provides an indication to a controller for controlling the pump. The flow rate information can also be used for providing status information, such as the existence of a blockage in the fluid delivery system.

Abstract: Disclosed is a system and method for assisting in verifying the right medication is provided to the right patient, in the right dose, at the right time, and via the right route. The method may include using a scanner to provide first, second, and third signals to a central computer (108) having data defining a first flow rate and first flow rate tolerance. First signal may include data identifying a medication. Second signal may include data identifying a second flow rate. Third signal may include data identifying th e volume of medication in a medication container (124). Central computer (108) authorizes the second flow rate if the second flow rate is withing the first flow rate tolerance. An infusion pump (120) receives new operating parameter s to implement the second flow rate if the central computer (108) authorizes t he second flow rate and the central computer (108) documents initiation of the second flow rate using a time source.

Abstract: A medical delivery system (10) is provided for delivering a medicament (17) or fluid (17) to a patient. The system comprises a disposable element such as a line set (14) associated with a container (16) containing the fluid (17), an identifier (18) associated with the line set (14) and having identification information associated therewith, and a delivery device (12) configured to engage the line set (14) and deliver the fluid (17) to the patient. The delivery device (12) includes a recognition system (20) that is capable of obtaining the identification information associated with the identifier (18). The identification information may include information regarding the identification of the fluid (17), a type of line set (14), or a type of administration associated with the line set (14). The device (12) can be capable of configuration based on the identification information.

Abstract: A drip chamber for an infusion tube, including: a first end (106) including a drip tube (108); a second end (110) including an exit port (112); and a wall (114) connecting the first and second ends and including an interior surface (116) with a hydrophobic portion (118). The drip chamber includes a space (122) enclosed by the interior wall and the first and second ends. The hydrophobic portion (118) of the interior surface repels liquid contacting the hydrophobic coating. The hydrophobic portion of the interior surface enables light to refract through the hydrophobic portion and the wall in the same manner as is the case when the hydrophobic portion is not present on the interior surface.
