Abstract: A method is disclosed for forming a paper web having a low tensile ratio. The method includes the steps of ejecting stock (S) substantially horizontally from a headbox (12), and receiving the rejected stock (S) onto a substantially horizontally disposed looped first wire (14), moving at substantially the same speed and the same direction as the ejected stock (S). The arrangement is such that a first portion of water (18) is removed from the ejected stock (S) downwardly through the first wire (14) during passage of the ejected stock (S) through an initial dewatering zone (20). The partially dewatered stock is sandwiched between the first wire (14) and a looped second wire (22), the wires (14, 22) defining therebetween a secondary dewatering zone (24) for further dewatering the ejected stock. A second and third portion of water (28, 30) are removed downwardly and upwardly, respectively, through the first and second wires (14, 22) during movement of the ejected stock past a curved shoe (26). The curvature of the secondary dewatering zone (24) is reversed such that the wires (14, 22) extend around a curved inverted box (34) connected to a source of partial vacuum (36), so that a fourth portion of water (38) is removed upwardly through the second wire (22) into the curved box (34). The arrangement is such that a gradual dewatering of the ejected stock is accomplished during passage of the stock (S) through the initial and secondary dewatering zones (20, 24), thereby inhibiting removal of fines from the ejected stock and minimizing the tensile ratio of the resultant web (W).

Abstract: A ventilating roll (12) for introducing a supply of relatively dry air into the pocket spaces (P1, P3, P5) between dryer rolls (10) and the co-running fabrics (F) and paper web (W) in a papermaking machine, and removing the relatively moist air which is liberated from the traveling paper web (W) as it comes into contact with the heated dryer rolls (10). The ventilating roll (12) has a plurality of separate compartments (18, 20), some of which conduct super-atmospheric pressure air into the pocket spaces, and some of which conduct sub-atmospheric air out of the pocket spaces. The compartments (18) conducting air into the roll alternate with the compartments (20) for conducting air out of the roll. The temperature of the internal structure of the roll is thereby balanced circumferentially about the center shaft (16) of the roll (12) and thermal bowing of the roll is kept to a minimum.

Abstract: A disk screen or like shaft structure is disclosed in which screen disks (14), surround disks (24), and spacers (28) are connected together in modular relation. The surround disks (24) have metallic flanges (25) which shield the plastic spacers (28) which are located on either side of the surround disks (24) between the screen disks (14). The spacers (28) are formed of resilient plastic to allow the disks to deflect from their radial plane and the flanges (25) of the surround disks (24) are sufficiently smaller then the spacers (28) to avoid contact with the screen disks (14) in their deflected positions. The assembly is placed under a predetermined endwise compression and the module is mounted on a rectangular shaft (27) which is suitably supported for rotation. The assembly is particularly suited for screening of wood chips in the paper making industry where exposed plastic parts is undesirable.

Abstract: In a headbox (10) of a web forming apparatus (12), a trailing element device (14) is disclosed for dividing a flow of stock (16) flowing through a slice chamber (18) of the headbox (10) towards a slice lip (20) of the headbox (10). The trailing element device (14) includes a rectangular sheet (22) having an upstream and a downstream end (24, 26) and a first and a second surface (28, 30). The upstream end (24) of the sheet (22) is pivotally secured within the slice chamber (18) for dividing the flow of stock into a first and a second current (34, 36). The downstream end (26) of the sheet (22) freely floats adjacent to the slice lip (20) such that the first current of stock (34) flows past the first surface (28) and the second current of stock (36) flows past the second surface (30) so that turbulence within the slice chamber (18) is reduced. At least one of the surfaces defines a plurality of parallel-spaced grooves (42-45 and 46-49) extending in a direction from the upstream to the downstream end (24, 26) of the sheet (22) for inhibiting the formation of machine direction vortices within the flow of stock that would otherwise cause streaking of the resultant web (W).

Abstract: An enclosed extended nip press apparatus (10) is disclosed for pressing water from a formed web (W). The apparatus (10) includes a frame (12) and a backing roll (14) rotatably secured to the frame (12). A press member (16) cooperates with a backing roll (14) for defining therebetween an extended nip (N) for the passage therethrough of the formed web (W). A press blanket (18) extends in a closed loop through the nip (N), the blanket (18) having a first and a second lateral edge (20, 22) and an inner and an outer surface (24, 26). A first and a second head (28, 30) are rotatably secured to the press member (16) with the first and second heads (28, 30) being disposed adjacent to and cooperating with the first and the second edges (20, 22) respectively of the blanket (18). The first and the second heads (28, 30) define first and second annular channels (32, 34) respectively for the reception therein of the first and the second lateral edges (20, 22) respectively of the blanket (18). A first and a second annular seal (36, 38) are disposed within respectively the first and the second channels (32, 34) with the seals (36, 38) contacting the respective edges of the blanket (18). A first and second plurality of barbs (40, 42) extend from the first and the second channels (32, 34) respectively such that the first plurality of barbs (40) extend towards and engage the first lateral edge (20) of the blanket (18) and are disposed on the opposite surface (26) of the blanket (18) relative to the first seal (36). The second plurality of barbs (42) extend towards and engage the second lateral edge (22) of the blanket (18). The second plurality of barbs (42) are disposed on the opposite surface (26) of the blanket (18) relative to the second seal (38) so that during use of the apparatus (10), lateral movement of the edges (20, 22) of the blanket (18) relative to the heads (28, 30) is inhibited.

Abstract: Apparatus for controlling the oxygenation of both the bearing lubrication oil and the hydraulic oil used for actuating the roll shell support elements (12) in a controlled deflection roll (10), such as used in the papermaking industry, includes a seal (26a, b) at either end of the controlled deflection roll (10) which establishes a gas-impervious seal between the roll shell support and rotation bearings (24a, b) at either end of the roll and the interior (28) of the roll. A source (40) of pressurized inert gas is linked (46, 42) to both the interior of the roll and to the reservoir (38) of hydraulic oil used to actuate the roll shell support shoes (12). This prevents oxygen from interfacing with the hydraulic oil at the only two points in the closed system where the hydraulic oil and the atmosphere would otherwise come into contact. A separate bearing oil lubrication system (32, 34, 35, 36) having its own reservoir is maintained to supply bearing lubricant to the bearings (24a, b) and return it to sump (20) while maintaining the bearing lubricant separate from the hydraulic oil.

Abstract: A forming apparatus (10) is disclosed for forming a web (W) from stock (S) ejected through a slice lip (12) of a headbox (14). The curvature of the curved drainage device (34) and the box (38) is opposite to the curvature of the further curved drainage device (44) such that the stock (S) is progressively drained through both wires (16, 20) during passage through the forming section (24) from the first (26) towards the second end (28) thereof.
