    Abstract: Disclosed is an ink tank (1) for use in an ink jet recording apparatus comprising a recording head, an ink supply needle, a moving unit for moving the ink supply needle to a predetermined position, and a movement preventing unit which prevents movement of the ink supply needle caused by the moving unit, the recording apparatus being able to detachably mount the ink tank (1). The ink tank (1) comprises an ink containing portion (11) for containing ink, a projected portion (3) having an ink communicating portion (13) for communicating the ink containing portion (11) with the ink supply needle, a lock release portion (4) provided at a front end of the ink tank (1) in a direction of insertion thereof for releasing the movement preventing unit, a grip portion (7) provided at a rear end of the ink tank (1) in the direction of insertion thereof, and a vertical surface portion (6) extending upward from the grip portion (7) perpendicularly to a bottom surface of the ink tank (1) in an opposed relation to the projected portion (3). The vertical surface portion (6) has an upper end at a higher level from the bottom surface than an end face of the ink communicating portion (13) of the projected portion (3), and a lower end at a lower level from the bottom surface than a lower end of a lateral surface of the projected portion (3).

    Abstract: An ink tank (1) comprises a housing detachably mountable on a liquid jet recording apparatus, which is capable of retaining liquid directly in the interior thereof, a supply portion (13) for supplying liquid retained in the housing to the recording apparatus and a communication portion (12) with the air outside for communicating the interior of the housing with the air outside. For this ink tank, the supply portion (13) and the communication portion (12) with the air outside are integrally formed, and at the same time, a plate member is provided to make the interior of the housing a closed space by joining the plate member to the housing, and then, erroneous installation prevention portions are arranged for the plate member to prevent the installation on the position other than specifically designated for the liquid jet recording apparatus. With the structure thus arranged, the ink tank (1) makes it possible to easily enhance the dimensional precision of the coupling portion with the recording apparatus, and the erroneous installation prevention portions as well. Thus, without depending on the precision of an ink tank as a whole, it is possible to enhance the reliability of the installation on or coupling with the recording apparatus.

    Abstract: Precision of detecting existence/non-existence of a liquid container and a liquid level in the container is improved even if the detection is performed by a single sensor, or even if the S/N ratio of the detection is low, the detected results can be discriminated from one another. For this, a concave polyhedron is provided in the center of the bottom surface of an optical prism in order to reduce the amount of light reflected on the bottom surface of the optical prism and returned to a photoreceptor. Moreover, a reflection curved surface having a quadratic surface e.g. spherical surface or paraboloid, is provided on the bottom surface of an ink tank, for reflecting light emitted by an optical unit consisting of a light emission device and a photoreceptor. By virtue of this, even in a case where an arrangement angle or position of the optical unit is deviated to some extent, sufficient amount of light for the photoreceptor can be received, making it possible to accurately detect existence/non-existence of ink and/or existence/non-existence of an ink tank.
