Abstract: The present invention relates to wireless communication systems, and more particularly to a method and an apparatus for periodically reporting the buffer status in a wireless communication system. Methods and arrangements for an improved buffer status reporting taking the type of radio bearer configuration into account is provided. This is achieved according to an embodiment of the present invention by taking the type of radio bearer configuration into account when determining the content of the buffer status report sent by the UE to the eNodeB.

Abstract: In a system for transmitting packets over a link between a compressor and a decompressor, a method is provided for implicit packet type identification. A set of implicit packet transmission characteristics including at least first and second characteristics is selected, and the compressor is operated to assign the first and second transmission characteristics to packets of first and second packet types, respectively. The decompressor is operated to detect transmission characteristics of packets received by the decompressor, and to thereby identify a received packet as being either a first or second packet type. Usefully, header free packets comprise one of the packet types.

Abstract: Packets are selectively marked or dropped when congestion of the radio resources is experienced, the selective marking/dropping being related to or dependent on the probability that a packet will be marked with the relative efficiency of usage of the radio link by the receiver, e.g., dependent upon radio resource usage costs and fairness. For example, packets are marked or dropped based on a user's associated share of the total (or a subset of the) shared radio resources. This share may be expressed in terms of the costs of the resources in terms the user's level of utilization of the shared resources, or in terms of it's fairness with respect to other users sharing the same resources. Thus, the present technology takes into account the distribution of resources usage between receivers contributing to the congested state of the radio network.

Abstract: Header compression repair techniques are accomplished, in various aspects, modes, embodiments, and implementations, by a remote terminal (40), by a header decompressor (46) for use at a remote terminal (40), and by methods of operating the remote terminal and/or decompressor, and (optionally) in some aspects, modes, embodiments, and implementations by taking into consideration aspects of structure and operation of a header compressor (25) as well. The remote unit (40) comprises a transceiver (42) or the like which receives, over a link (36) such as an air interface (38), packets including packets having headers which have been compressed and packets which are potentially out-of-order. The header decompressor (46), upon detection of non-receipt of packets anticipated in a flow (34) of packets over the link, stores, with respect to each non-receipt, a snapshot of header decompression context information existing at the non-receipt. Then, when the header decompressor detects header decompression failure for a subsequently received packet, the header decompressor determines (e.g., by executing a repair process) whether header decompression of the subsequently received packet can be achieved using one of plural stored snapshots.

Abstract: The invention relates to header compression in packet-based communication systems. A mechanism that allows a compressor to reject a request for an undesirable mode change is proposed. The compressor indicates to the decompressor that the mode change request is being ignored, whereafter the decompressor may abort the initiated mode transition, with the understanding that the compressor has valid reasons to refuse it. The compressor preferably determines whether the rejection succeeded by link monitoring, and in case of a successful rejection, the compressor remains in its current mode. A preferred embodiment performs explicit rejection signaling through a mode change rejection message with a redefined mode value. The rejection signaling of the invention makes it possible for a compressor to disable the transition to a particular mode and enables implementations with only a subset of all modes.

Abstract: An Internet Protocol (IP) headers decompressor node, a method and an IP headers manager in an IP network for fast IP headers compression initialization is thereby provided. The invention teaches how to exchange IP packets between at least two nodes of the IP network for establishment of a session therebetween, to initialize, at a first one of the at least two nodes, a static portion of a decompression context prior to completion of the establishment of the session and to uncompress application related IP packets exchanged with a second of the at least two nodes. In an optional embodiment of the present invention, it is further taught how exchanging IP packets between at least two nodes of the IP network may further comprise extracting information from the IP packets at a first one of the at least two nodes of the IP network.
