Abstract: An aqueous polymer dispersion which is suitable for the preparation of paints having high wet adhesion is prepared by copolymerisation in aqueous medium of vinyl esters of saturated monocarboxylic acids in the presence of an olefinically unsaturated acetoacetate. The vinyl ester employed is vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate and/or vinyl isobutyrate together with vinyl esters of saturated monocarboxylic acids having 5 to 20 carbon atoms whose carboxyl group is bonded to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom. The resultant dispersions are suitable for the preparation of gloss emulsion paints having high wet adhesion to non-sorptive substrates and have high resistance to hydrolysis.

The paints adhere well to smooth, non-absorbent surfaces, under damp conditions, e.g. in kitchens or bathrooms. They are very resistant to saponification. (D) Allyl acetylacetate (II) is claimed. In an example, a paint prepd. from a copolymer of methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, butyl acrylate, styrene and (II) had an abrasion resistance in a wet brush test of >5000, a similar paint, in which the copolymer did nto contain (II), gave a value of 110.
