Abstract: A method for utilising resources of a CDMA telecommunications system comprising a plurality of base stations B10 and one or more mobile terminals MT10 comprises causing the base stations to indicate, to the one or more terminals, whether they have unused capacity and causing one or more of the mobile terminals to change or maintain constant its data rate or power output dependent upon the unused capacity indication received from the base stations. A contention resolution phase may be used so that only sufficient terminals increase their data rate to accommodate the unused capacity. The system may be arranged so that the one or more mobile terminal only increases its data rate or power output if all base stations with which the mobile is in communication have sufficient capacity to accommodate such an increase.

Abstract: A method for determining handover between different communications systems 10, 12, 14 eg. cellular, cordless, wireless PABX. Handover may be initiated manually or automatically, by reference to records of the associations of cells belonging to different systems, stored by the mobile. The mobile can access a bulletin board which provides information on available systems and inter-system cell associations. Inter-system handover is then determined from this information. Abstract: In a method for handing over a call from an initial communications network to a target communications network, a call is established between a mobile subscriber unit (12) and the initial communications network (10 or 11) using a first identification number allocated to that unit in the initial network. A desire to handover to the target network is identified and a new link in the target network (11 or 10 respectively) is established using a second identification number allocated to the unit (12) in the target network.
