    Abstract: Method and apparatus for variable length Physical Layer (PL) packet generation. Multiple Security Layer (SL) packets may be multiplexed into a single PL packet to increase efficiency, wherein the SL packets may have variable lengths. In one embodiment, different format SL packets for different users are combined into capsules that form the PL packet. Shorter packets are for users in poor channel conditions or requiring smaller amounts of data due to the applications and the accompanying Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. In one embodiment, a modified Preamble structure provides for Unicast or multi-user packets. Alternate embodiment provides modified Rate Sets, a mechanism for identifying ACK from a single-user packet or a multiplexed packet (delayed ACK). ON/OFF keying for ACK channel v/s bi-polar keying used in IS-856, and/or multi-valued interpretation of DRC.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for estimating maximum rate of data and for estimating a transmission power required for transmission of a data with a rate of data in a communication system are disclosed. A terminal determines a quality metric of a communication link, over which data are to be transmitted, and modifies the determined quality metric by a quality metric margin. The terminal then estimates the maximum rate of data in accordance with the modified quality metric. Alternatively, the terminal then estimates transmission power required for transmission of a data with a rate of data in accordance with the rate of data and the modified quality metric. The quality metric margin may be pre-determined or dynamically adjusted. The terminal dynamically adjusts the quality metric margin in accordance with a result of comparison of a transmit power corresponding to the estimated maximum rate of data with an actual transmit power used to transmit the data.

    Abstract: An access terminal (206) is configured for wireless communication with an access network (204) within a sector (1032) is disclosed. The access terminal (206) includes a transmitter (2608) for transmitting a reverse traffic channel to the access network (204), an antenna (2614) for receiving signals from the access network (204), a processor (2602) and memory (2604) in electronic communication with the processor (2602). Instructions are stored in the memory (2604). The instructions are arranged to estimate a current value of a reverse activity bit (1444) transmitted by the access network (204). If the estimated current value of the reverse activity bit indicates that the sector is busy, a current power allocation for each flow of a plurality of flows is decreased on the access terminal. The magnitude of the decrease for a particular flow is determined according to a downward ramping function that is designed for the flow, the downward ramping function being a function of the current power allocation for the flow. If the estimated current value of the reverse activity bit indicates that the sector is idle, the current power allocation for each flow of the plurality of flows is increased on the access terminal. The magnitude of the increase for a particular flow is determined according to an upward ramping function that is designed for the flow, the upward ramping function being a function of the current power allocation for the flow.
