Abstract: A steel tooth bit includes one or more rolling cone cutters having a generally conical surface, a heel surface, and preferably a transition surface therebetween. A row of gage cutter elements are secured to the cone cutter on the transition surface and have cutting surfaces that cut to full gage. A first inner row of off-gage steel teeth is positioned on the conical surface of the cone cutter so that the gage-facing cutting surfaces of the teeth are close to gage, but are preferably off-gage a distance D at a knee that is formed on the gage facing surface. Distance D is strategically selected such that the gage and off-gage cutter elements cooperatively cut the corner of the borehole. The lower most portion of the gage facing surface of these steel teeth are off gage a distance D' which is greater than D so as to bring the cutting tip of the teeth off gage to prevent undesired wear and rounding off of the tip of the cutter element. The upper most portion of the gage-facing surface is also preferably off gage a distance D'' that is greater than D so as to optimize the surface area on the gage facing surface that is in contact with the borehole corner.

Abstract: A steel tooth, particularly suited for use in a rolling cone bit, includes a roo t region, a cutting tip spaced from the root region and a gage facing surface therebetween. The gage facing surface includes a knee, and is configured such that the cutting tip is maintain ed at a position off the gage curve. So positioned, the cutting tip is freed from having to perform any s ubstantial cutting duty in the corner on the borehole corner, and instead may be configured and opt imized for bottom hole cutting duty. The knee on the gage facing surface is configured and positio ned so as to serve primarily to cut the borehole wall. It is preferred that the knee be positioned off gage, but that it be closer to the gage curve than the cutting tip.

Abstract: Dual functioning seals for use in forming a lubricant seal in a rotary rock bit comprise an annular elastomeric seal body having a dynamic seal surface for sealing against a dynamic surface and a static seal surface for sealing against a static surface. The seal body has an asymmetric axial cross-sectional geometry the dynamic seal surface having a greater radius of curvature than that of the static seal surface. The dynamic and static seal surfaces are formed from different elastomeric materials, and the dynamic seal surface is formed from an elastomeric material that is harder and more wear resistant than the elastomeric material used to form the static seal surface. A rotary rock bit seal constructed in this manner is well adapted to accommodate the different operating conditions and sealing requirements that exist both at the dynamic and static surfaces of the seal to ensure optimal seal performance and, thereby enhance the service life of the rock bit.

Abstract: Sealed bearing rotary cone drill bits are subject to seal wear from detritus or debris generated during operation of the drill bit in a borehole. The debris invades the seal gland area resulting in premature cone bearing failure. A shale burn plug secured in the leg back face and positioned between the base of the rotary cone and the leg back face has a shale or detritus diverting ridge formed in the face of the plug. Additionally, the burn plug is energized to urge the ridged face of the burn plug against the base of the rotary cone; the ridge being non-radially oriented to divert debris away from the seal gland.

Abstract: Annular seals of this invention comprise an elastomeric seal body that is configured to fit within a seal gland of a rock bit. The seal comprises a first seal surface, for providing a seal along a dynamic rotary surface formed between the seal body and one portion of the rock bit, and a second seal surface, for providing a seal between the seal body and another portion of the rock bit. The annular seal further comprises an extrusion prevention member that is positioned adjacent a surface of the seal body between the first and second seal surfaces. The extrusion prevention member can be integral, partially-attached, or independent of the seal body. The extrusion prevention member is preferably formed from a material having a hardness that is greater than that of the seal body. The member is positioned along the seal body at a location adjacent a groove, formed between opposed members of the rock bit, to act as a physical barrier to prevent the seal from being extruded therethrough.

Abstract: A drill bit having one or more nozzle retention bodies attached by a single orientation mounting is disclosed, as is the associated method for its manufacture. The upper end of the nozzle retention body has a fluid inlet in communication with the internal fluid plenum of the drill bit, and the lower end of the nozzle retention body includes a fluid outlet that defines an exit flow angle. The exit flow angle is angularly disposed from the longitudinal axis of the drill bit. The nozzle retention body may advantageously be chamfered or the like to provide a reduced cross-sectional area at the lower end of the nozzle retention body. The outer surface of the nozzle retention body (and attached hardened elements) may extend substantially to gage, or may fall short of that diameter.
