    Abstract: A cutter element that balances maximum gage-keeping capabilities with minimal tensile stress induced damage to cutter elements is disclosed. The cutter elements (150) of the present invention have a non-symmetrical shape and may include a more aggressive cutting profile than conventional cutter elements. In one embodiment, a cutter element is configured such that the inside angle at which its leading face (114) intersects the wear face (112) is less than the inside angle at which is trailing face (118) intersects the wear face (112). This can also be accomplished by providing the cutter element (160) with a relieved wear face (162). In another embodiment of the invention, the surfaces of the present cutter element (500) are curvilinear and the transitions between the leading (514) and trailing (518) faces and the gage face are rounded or contoured. In this embodiment, the leading transition is made sharper than the trailing transition.

    Abstract: A roller cone dill bit which has a row, preferably a gage row, of cutting elements formed into a first group of adjacent cutting elements having one pitch pattern and a second group of adjacent cutting elements having a different pitch pattern where at least one cutting element in the first group either has a different geometry, a different material property or a different material type to the cutting elements in the second group. The cutting element is preferably modified because of the expected dull condition of the cutting element. The different geometry is typically any of the crest width, the crest length or the diameter of the cutting element or the cutting element has an asymmetric crest because of a bulk on either the leading or trailing edge. The cutting elements are preferably made of tungsten carbide in a cobalt matrix and the cutting element with a different material type will typically either have less carbide or more cobalt. The different in material property is preferably due to the cutting element having increased hardness or toughness.

    Abstract: A cutter element having a substantially flat wear face and leading compression and trailing tension zones, wherein the leading compression zone is sharper than the trailing tension zone. Sharpness is defined as either a smaller inside angle at the intersection of a pair of planes or as a smaller radius of curvature. The cutter element of the present invention experiences reduced stress on its trailing portion in the direction of cutting movement and therefore is less subject to extreme impact damage and cyclic fatigue. The present invention can be applied with particular advantage to heel row cutters, but can also be applied to cutters in other rows that primarily ream the borehole wall and cooperatively cut the borehole corner. The present cutter element can be constructed so as to have either a positive or negative rake angle at its leading compression zone, or to have any of a variety of shapes, depending on the characteristics of the formation in which it is to be used.
