    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal improved in the speed of response, a range of service temperature and orientability by using a ferroelectric liquid crystal and a liquid crystal having an inverted helical structure as the chiral component and adding two other liquid crystals as the nonchiral component to the chiral component. CONSTITUTION:This ferroelectric liquid crystal composition comprises a ferroelectric liquid crystal I of formula I (wherein m is 6-15; and n is 3-16) and a liquid crystal II having an inverted helical structure and represented by formula II or III (wherein l is 6-15) as the chiral component and a liquid crystal IV of formula IV (wherein p and q are each 6-15) and a liquid crystal V of formula V (wherein j and k are each 6-15) as the nonchiral component. The nonchiral component comprising the liquid crystal IV and the liquid crystal V is added for the purpose of improving the practical properties such as orientability and a range of service temperature. This liquid crystal composition has a possibility of applications such as a strong quick optical shutter or a display of a high display information quantity which is chemically stable and shows a high spontaneous polarization.

CONSTITUTION:A photochromic film comprising a photochromic compd. contained in a photosensitive layer and composed of a spiropyran compd. selected from among a spiropyran compd. of the formula I, a spiropyran compd. of the formula II, and a spiropyran compd. of the formula III. In the formula, R1 is a 1-20C alkyl; and R2, R3, R4, and R5 are each H, a 1-5C alkyl, a 1-5C alkoxy, or a halogen atom. The polymeric material used in the photochromic film is pref. a chlorine polymeric material because of excellent optical stability after color development.

CONSTITUTION:The titled film comprises the photosensitive layer contg. the spiropyrane compd. as the main component provided on a substrate, and the protective layer provided on the photosensitive layer. The spiropyrane compd. contd. in the titled film is exemplified preferably by the compd. shown by formulas I-III. Said compds. are used by dissolving various kinds of industrial solvents representative to alcohols, ketones and ethers, and a mixture thereof, and by applying the obtd. solution on the substrate, followed by drying it. The resin composed of the protective layer is preferably a crosslinking type resin, further preferably a thermosetting type resin, and preferably a colorless and transparent resin. The protective resin is exemplified by an acrylic resin, an epoxy resin, silicone, polyurethane and polysulfide, etc.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve running stability and friction resistance by holding a lubricating agent contg. a specified perfluoroalkyl carboxylate on a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer essentially consisting of magnetic powder and resin binder on a nonmagnetic substrate. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic layer 2 provided with a layer contg. the lubricating agent shown by a dotted section is formed on the surface of the nonmagnetic substrate 1. The perfluoroalkyl carboxylate expressed by the chemical formula is used for the lubricating agent held on the magnetic layer 2. In the formula, R denotes a hydrocarbon group of 1-25C and n is made n>=4. The running stability and friction resistance are thus improved.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element in which a pretilt angle of about 2-4° (to a normal direction of a substrate) is stably obtained and an alignment layer is not deteriorated even upon long-time photoirradiation in the case of use in a projector.
    SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element has an alignment layer obtained by coating the top of a substrate 11 with an inorganic alignment layer 31 having an alkyl group 32 on each side chain, firing the coating film and obliquely vapor-depositing silicon oxide 41 on the inorganic alignment layer 31 from an oblique direction with respect to a normal direction of the substrate 11 to form a silicon oxide film.     Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display device having a pretilt angle as high as >=3 deg. by a photoalignment method or ion beam alignment method and having the optical characteristics equal to or higher than a device produced by a rubbing method. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display device includes a process of forming an alignment film 2 on a substrate (TFT substrate 3 or CR substrate 4) and subjecting the alignment film 2 to the photoaligment treatment or ion beam alignment treatment. As for the alignment film 2, an alignment film 2 consisting of a photocrosslinking polyimide or photocrosslinking polyvinylcinnamate material is formed. The irradiation angle θof light is controlled to within 15 deg. from the normal direction of the alignment film 2, and the film is subjected to two-step irradiation. Or, an alignment film consisting of a soluble polyimide or polyamic acid is formed as the alignment film 2, and the irradiation angle of the ion beam is controlled to within 40 deg. from the normal direction of the alignment film 2.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide black dichromatic dyestuff of a composite type useful for a guest-host liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: This guest-host liquid crystal display device has a pair of substrates 1, 2 which are joined to each other via a prescribed spacing, guest- host liquid crystals 4 which contain dichromatic dyestuff 3 of a composite type and are held between these substratea 1 and 2 and electrodes 5, 6 which impress voltages on these guest-host liquid crystals 4 formed on the respective substrates 1, 2. The dichromatic dyestuff 3 consists of a mixture contg. the orange dyestuff having the absorption max. at least around 450nm, the red dyestuff having the absorption max. in a range of 500 to 560nm, the magenta/blue dyestuff having the absorption max. in a range of 580 to 600nm and the blue dyestuff having the absorption max. in a range of 630 to 660nm. The mixture is so compounded that the guest-host liquid crystals 4 show a black color as a whole when the mixture is added to these liquid crystals.
