Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a device which can save space and electric power and which realizes high image quality by disposing a light emitting element, optical waveguide to guide the light introduced from the light emitting element, optical switch to turn on and off the guided light, and color converting member which is excited by the guided light to emit light. SOLUTION: A short wavelength semiconductor laser or the like is used as a light source, an optical fiber 3 is used as the optical waveguide, a liquid crystal layer 4, especially a ferroelectric liquid crystal, which can perform fast switching and has a large difference in double refraction is used as the optical switch to control total reflection, and a phosphor layer 5 is used as the color converting member. Transparent electrodes 6, 7 are formed, for example, as XY matrix electrodes on both sides of the liquid crystal layer 4 to drive the layer 4. Furthermore, alignment films 8, 9 to align the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer 4 are formed. With this structure, since the loss of light is small for increasing the light emission efficiency, the structure is simple and the device can be made large in size and can be made thin, regardless of its size.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the luminous efficiency of phosphors and to reduce power consumption by providing a cavity section opened at least at a portion facing the other discharge maintaining electrode on at least one of discharging maintaining electrode between a first and second discharge maintaining electrodes. SOLUTION: A cavity section 10 penetrating in the extending direction of an address electrode 8 is provided at each portion where first and second discharge maintaining electrodes 4, 5 form a display cell. When the prescribed voltage is alternatingly applied between the first and second discharge maintaining electrodes 4, 5, negative glow is formed on the inner wall of a cavity section 10 provided on the discharge maintaining electrode serving as a cathode within the first and second discharge maintaining electrodes 4, 5 by a hollow cathode effect. When the negative glow is formed on the inner wall of the cavity section 10, the emission of secondary electrons is increased, and the discharge current is increased, thereby more ultraviolet rays are generated in the vacuum space between a first transparent substrate 2 and a second transparent substrate 3.

In this case, for example, when liquid 9 is electrolytic solution, the probe 10 is used as an anode, and the work object 11 is used as a cathode, and when bias voltage is impressed, a cation atom generated by ionization of the electrolyte solution is deposited in a fine pattern (as a fine projecting part) as a metallic atom onto a surface of the work object 11 situated just under the probe 10.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the thermal damage of a substrate and to enable the repetitive execution of good reproducing by providing dielectric layers having the thermal conductivity on the substrate side higher than the thermal conductivity on the optical recording layer side between the substrate and the optical recording layer. CONSTITUTION:This optical recording medium has the dielectric layers 1 constituted of two layers. The thermal conductivity of the first dielectric layer 3 on the substrate 2 side is higher than the thermal conductivity of the second dielectric layer 5 on the optical recording layer 4 side. The optical recording layer is effectively heated up and the heat conduction from the optical recording layer to the substrate is suppressed when such dielectric layers are provided. Then, the thermal damage of the substrate is prevented at the time of recording even in the case the optical recording medium has the optical recording layer for which high-temp. thermal recording is required. The good signal recording is thus executed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable the control of a Curie temp. and saturation magnetization while maintaining good magneto-optical characteristics by using a material alternately laminated with CoNi alloy layers and Pt layers as a recording layer. CONSTITUTION:The metallic thin films of the artificial lattice of a CoNi-Pt system alternately laminated with the Co100-XNiX alloy layers and the Pt layers are used as the recording layer. The Curie temp. and saturation magnetization of the artificial lattice films of the CoNi-Pt system constituted in such a manner can be adjusted by changing the Ni compsn. rate x (atomic %) of the CoNi alloy layers without deteriorating magneto-optical characteristics. The change range of the Ni compsn. rate x is, therefore, specified to 20 to 60 atomic %. The thickness constitution of the artificial lattice films is preferably 50 to 800Angstrom total film thickness. The film thickness of the CoNi layer in particular is preferably 2 to 8Angstrom , the film thickness of the Pt layer 3 to 40Angstrom , and the total film thickness 50 to 400Angstrom . The excellent magneto-optical characteristics and the high sensitivity are obtd. and the good execution of erasing and overwriting is enabled by using such recording layer.

CONSTITUTION:Xe gas is used as the sputtering gas when film-forming the dielectric layer by sputtering method instead of generally used Ar gas. As a result, the dielectric layer which displays excellent Kerr-rotation, angle amplification effect is formed to produce the magneto-optical recording medium excellent in magneto-optical effect. In this case, the partial pressure of Xe gas in sputtering atmosphere is 2X10 -3X10 Torr.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a magneto-optical recording medium capable of coping with high-density recording by constituting a magnetic layer from an artificial lattice film, in which a Co layer and Pt layer or Pd layer are laminated, and from a rare earth-transition metal film and by subjecting said artificial lattice film and rare earth-transition metal film to a switched bond connection with each other. CONSTITUTION:Various targets of Tb27Fe61Co12 alloy, Co and Pt are mounted in the chamber of a sputtering apparatus. Then, a glass substrate 1 is mounted on a substrate holder and water-cooled and the chamber is exhausted of the air so as to be regulated to a predetermined degree of vacuum. After that, the TbFeCo alloy as target is subjected to magnetron sputtering in an atmosphere, the pressure of which is brought to 4m Torr by the introduction of Ar gas, while the glass substrate 1 is rotated at the speed of 16rpm for the purpose of forming RE-TM film 3. Subsequently, Co and Pt are respectively used as targets so that the Co layer and Pt layer are alternately formed into an artificial lattice film 4 by binary simultaneous magnetron sputtering in an Ar gas atmosphere.
