    Abstract: PURPOSE:To attempt to form an optical fiber having excellent mechanical strength and exhibiting a little decrease in mechanical characteristics, especially in a retaining force between a contact bonding type connector and the optical fiber even at elevated temp. by using a specified photo-curable compsn. as a cladding material for a plastic-clad optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:In an optical fiber comprising a quartz or optical glass as a core and a plastic having a refractive index lower than that of the core as a clad, a photo-curable compsn. consisting of at least one compd. having at least two unsatd. bonds in its molecule and a photo-polymn. initiator is used as a cladding material. Said unsatd. bond means a carbon-carbon double bond and not only vinyl and allyl groups, but also highly reactive acryl and methacryl groups can be cited. As a core glass is coated with said compsn. uniformly with a thickness of as small as 1-100mum, it is pref. that the viscosity is on a level of 100-10,000cps. It is therefore pref. that not only the monomer but also prepolymerized polymers having a proper degree of polymn. are incorporated in the compsn.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a plastic clad optical fiber which has a high serviceable temp. and sufficient strength by consisting said fiber of a specific compsn. for curing. CONSTITUTION:This optical fiber is constituted of the compsn. for curing which consists essentially of an active hydrogen-contg. fluoroalkyl acrylate polymer and isocyanate compd. contg. at least two isocyanate groups. The active hydrogen-contg. fluoroacrylate polymer is preferably the copolymer obtd. by copolymerizing a monomer mixture composed of a fluoroalkyl acrylate or methacrylate monomer and active hydrogen-contg. monomer. Namely, this fiber is eventually formed of the cured matter obtd. by curing the clad material and the clad having the refractive index lower than the refractive index of the core is obtd. The plastic clad optical fiber having the high serviceable temp. and the sufficient strength is thereby obtd.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oriented polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) molding comprising a porous oriented PTFE rod of which the whole or an arbitrary part has a reduced cell diameter and a sufficiently high tensile strength, and a process for producing the molding. SOLUTION: This oriented PTFE molding 1 comprises a porous oriented PTFE rod at least part of which has a cell diameter reduced by tortional deformation. The process for producing the molding 1 comprises applying a twist of at least one turn/cm to at least a part of a porous oriented PTFE rod and then thermally fixing it at a temperature at least equal to the melting point of PTFE. Or, it comprises subjecting a porous oriented PTFE rod to secondary orientation while applying a twist of at least one turn/cm at 160 deg.C or higher to at least a part of the rod, and then thermally fixing it at a temperature at least equal to the melting point of PTFE.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a photocurable resin excellent in mechanical strengths and optical transmission characteristics by mixing a compound having a plurality of unsaturated bonds with a photopolymerization initiator and a specified coupling agent. CONSTITUTION:This resin composition comprises a compound having at least two unsaturated bonds in the molecule, a photopolymerization initiator and a coupling agent which can form a chemical bond with quartz or an optical glass, and said coupling agent is one having no unsaturated bond. Examples of the coupling agents used include silane coupling agents such as methoxymethylsilane and tetramethoxysialne. More desirably, one containing a fluorine atom or an ester group in the molecule is desirable to improve the compatibility with other cladding material components. A plastic-clad optical fiber prepared by using this resin composition is advantageous in respect of the improved strength of optical fiber and the difficult occurrence of peeling between the core and the clad in attaching a pressure connector because it is improved in the wettability of the core with the clad and in the adhesiveness between the core and the clad.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To shorten the molding time and reduce the leakage of uncured resin during molding by a method wherein a mixture, the composition of which consists of specified quantities of epoxy, carboxylic acid anhydride, chrome compound and tertiary amine compound, is used as matrix resin. CONSTITUTION:One to five wt% of active chrome compound is added as curing accelerator to a conventional mixture, which consists of 40-60 wt% of epoxy, 40-60 wt% of carboxylic acid anhydride and 1-5 wt% of tertiary amine compound, in order to be used as matrix resin. The active chrome compound is available on the market in the form of a mixture with tertiary amine compound such as benzyledimethylamine or the like under the trade name of ATC-3 or the like, and it is a curing accelerator effective for curing the conventional epoxy-acid anhydride-based thermosetting resin in a short period of time than ever.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain polymer-clad optical fiber having high strength and generating low loss by forming a clad part of a resin prepd. by setting an ultraviolet setting resin compsn. with ultraviolet rays. CONSTITUTION:A compd. having an ultraviolet ray functional group and an Si atom. bonded to at least one alkoxy group and halogen in a molecule, as expressed by formula I, is added to a clad-forming resin compsn. as a compd. capable of forming a chemical bond between core glass and a polymer in the stage of setting the compsn. with ultraviolet rays. In formula I, Z is a functional group capable of forming a chemical bond with an ultraviolet ray setting resin by the irradiation with ultraviolet rays; at least one among X1-X3 is an alkoxy group or halogen atom., and others are alkyl group or fluoroalkyl group; R is a single bond or a divalent org. group connecting Z to Si. By this constitution, a degree of increase of loss due to attachment of a caulked connector is reduced remarkably, increasing moreover drawing resistance, providing thus polymer clad optical fiber having high strength and generating low loss.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To eliminate a decrease in the quantity of transmitted light by a temp. or humidity change by using a polymer having a specific org. siloxane unit and hydrophilic unit as a light guiding part. CONSTITUTION:This light guide has the light guiding part and clad or the light guiding part, clad and sheath. The light guiding part consists of the polymer having the org. siloxane unit expressed by forming formula I and the hydrophilic unit having a hydrophilic group. In formula I, R and R are hydrocarbon groups of 1-12C which are the same or different. The hydrophilic group of the hydrophilic unit is particularly preferably, for example, a methyl ester group. The undesirable influence of the humidity and temp. on light transmission is thereby eliminated.
