Abstract: The invention provides a method for controlling rotor speed of a wind turbine. The method includes defining a system model describing resonance dynamics of a wind turbine component, such as a wind turbine tower, where the system model has a nonlinear input term, e.g. a periodic forcing term. The method includes applying a transform to the system model to obtain a transformed model for response oscillation amplitude of the wind turbine component, where the transformed model has a linear input term. The method includes defining a wind turbine model describing dynamics of the wind turbine, and including the transformed model. A model-based control algorithm, e.g. model predictive control, is applied using the wind turbine model to determine at least one control output, e.g. generator torque, and the control output is used to control rotor speed of the wind turbine. Advantageously, such a method allows the effect of resonance of a wind turbine component to be included in a model-based control setup for a wind turbine as the transformed model allows for efficient on-line, real time solving of the wind turbine model.

Abstract: The present invention refers to a method for operating a wind turbine, the wind turbine particularly comprising a tower and a rotor with rotor blades. The pitch angles of the rotor blades are adjusted to generate a force on the rotor and the tower. The force is adjusted to counteract and damp an oscillation. The adjustment is enabled by an activation decision unit, if the activation decision unit decides that certain parameters characterising the oscillation or loads of the tower indicate a requirement and/or if the activation decision unit determines that the generated force is sufficient to counteract an oscillation of the tower. In various embodiments the parameters characterising the oscillation or loads of the tower comprise current oscillations and their amplitude, an estimate of loads incurred in the turbine structure, an estimate whether damping in the near future might become necessary, an indication whether a different oscillation damping algorithm than individual blade pitch control is currently performing, and an indication whether a wind speed is above a certain portion of a rated wind speed.

Abstract: Embodiments herein describe varying the rotor speed based on the current wind speed when operating in a low power mode. Generally, as the wind speed increases above the rated wind speed (i.e., the wind speed at which the turbine is capable of producing its rated or maximum output power), the rotor speed can be reduced thereby minimizing the risk that the turbine experiences smearing or torque reversals. In one embodiment, as the rotor speed decreases, the turbine maintains the ability to ramp to the rated power of the turbine only by pitching in the blades to an optimal blade pitch angle. Thus, upon receiving a request to cease operating in the low power mode, the turbine can increase the output power to the rated power without first increasing the rotor speed.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for determining dynamic parameters associated with damping properties of a wind turbine. The method involves active excitation of tower oscillations by adjusting the pitch or rotor torque. After the active excitation, the parameters can be determined from the passive decay of the excited oscillations. Alternatively, the oscillations can be actively damped, so that the parameters can be determined from the active decay of the excited oscillations. The method for promoting oscillations may be triggered in response to different events or in response to predetermined times for determining the actual dynamic parameters.
