Abstract: A method of making a seat component including the steps of sewing marginal edges of a plurality of cover material pieces with a plastic strip disposed between exterior surfaces of the marginal edges in a configuration coincident with a elongated sharply concave styling character line to form a seam in which a line of stitches extends through the marginal edges of the cover material pieces and a reduced thickness central portion of the strip along a severance line thereon or slightly outwardly thereof, applying a tape of imperforate material along the interior surface of the seam, positioning a sewn and taped panel of the cover pieces so that the exterior surface thereof is in facing relation to mold face of mold member, inserting an exterior edge portion of the strip into an elongated slot in the mold surface so as to accurately locate the seam of the panel along the elongated sharply convex styling character line, foaming a foamable material so as to adhere a body of foamed material to the interior surface of the panel while the exterior surface is held by vacuum in conformity with the mold surface, removing the panel and then removing the exterior edge portion of strip along the severance line thereof from the panel, a seat formed with one or more such components.

Abstract: A striker engageable with a latch to retain a moveable closure with respect to a vehicle compartment, said striker comprising a mounting plate having mounting openings for mounting adjacent a compartment opening at a predetermined location or a free end of said moveable closure member at a predetermined location, said mounting plate having recesses or grooves formed therewith for receiving an anchoring a portion of said striker, said striker having a keeper portion for engaging said latch when said moveable closure member is moved to a closed position, said keeper having a first leg and a second leg each having two ends, said first and second legs being joined together by a third portion proximate their distal ends for engaging said latch in use, said first and/or second legs having disposed proximate the other end thereof remote said third portion an anchoring leg extending angularly away (longitudinally, transversely or upwardly) therefore, said either anchoring leg, and/or the portion of said first and second legs adjacent said anchoring leg, being fastened within said mounting plate by welding within compatibly shaped recesses or grooves formed with said mounting plate and being of sufficient depth and diameter to fully accommodate said anchoring leg and the portion of said first and second legs adjacent said anchoring leg, wherein any load applied to said latch and striker tending to separate said striker from said latch, will be resisted by said anchoring leg and the portion of said first and second legs adjacent said anchoring leg welded within said channel of said at least one mounting plate.

Abstract: A door latch assembly has a housing (14) defining a mouth (48). A detent fork (44) is pivotally mounted within the housing to cooperate with the mouth to pivot between an open and closed condition for receiving, engaging and cinching a keeper of a striker. The detent fork (44) is biased in the open condition. A pivotally mounted pawl (50, 54) is biased into engagement with the detent fork for retaining the detent fork in the closed condition. A pivotally mounted inside release arm (34) is movable between a stand-by position and a release position and biased to the stand-by position. A pivotally mounted outside release arm (32) is movable between a stand-by position and a release position, and biased to the stand-by position. A pivotally mounted locking cam (58) operably engages the pawl (50, 54) for positioning the pawl to selectively engage the release arms (34, 32). The locking cam (58) is rotatable between an unlocked position for urging the pawl to engage at least one of t he arms (34, 32), a single lock position for urging the pawl to engage at most one of the arms (34, 32), and a double lock position for urging the pawl (50, 54) to disengage both arms. A double lock lever (66) operably engages the rotatable locking cam (58) for rotating the locking cam between the unlocked position, the single lock position and the double lock position. A single lock sub-assembly comprises a handle lever (94) coupled to the rotatable locking cam (58) for rotation therewith between the unlocked position and the single lock position and uncoupled from the rotating locking cam when the rotatable locking cam is rotated between the single lock position, and the double lock position.

Abstract: A hydraulic closure system and method is disclosed for a motor vehicle (10) that enables automatic opening and closing, as well as manual closing, of a closure (16) pivotally mounted to an opening frame (14) defining a closure opening in the motor vehicle. The system includes at least one hydraulic actuator assembly (20) attached at opposite ends thereof to the closure (16) and the opening frame (14), respectively. A motorized hydraulic pump (32) inputs energy to the actuator (20) by creating hydraulic fluid flow with respect to the actuator to move the closure (16) from the opened position to the closed position, and a biased energy storage system (140) inputs energy to the actuator (20) to move the closure (16) from the closed position to the opened position. In a preferred embodiment, the pump (32) is activated by manually generated movement of the closure (16) from the opened position toward the closed position for a prescribed distance in more than a prescribed time. Also disclosed is an obstacle detection mechanism (110) whi ch detects obstacles interfering with closing of the closure based on monitored pressure in the system caused by the pump created fluid flow. A level detection (210) and compensation feature adjusts the amount of energy stored in the biased energy storage system (140) forope ning the closure (16) based on the detected inclination or declination of the vehicle (10) so that the amount of energy stored is commensurate with the amount required to open the closure (16). An energy monitoring and control system (156) maintains the amount of energy stored in the biased energy storage system (140) for opening the closure (16) within a predetermined range.

Abstract: A striker assembly (40) for a vehicle door opening (12) comprising a base me mber (50) having a central embossed portion (52) provided with mounting holes (54) and fastener receiving holes above and bel ow the embossed portion (52) and a striker member (58) having mounting elements (62) extending rearwardly therefrom constructed and arranged to pass through the mounting holes (54) with f ree ends deformed to extend over the embossed portion (52) to fixedly retain the striker member (58) to the base member (50). The strike r member (58) has a mounting portion (60), a post portion (66) extending from the mounting portion (60), a connecting portion (70) ext ending from the end of the post portion (66) in generally parallel relation to the mounting portion (60) defining a latch receiving opening (74) and an inner end portion (68). Preferably, the striker assembly is mounted by re silient material (88) adhered between the interior surfa ces of a mounting member (78) and the exterior surfaces of the base member (50) dispo sed therein to thereby resiliently cushion the tendency of the striker member (58) fixed to said base member (50) and extending outwardly o f the mounting member (78) to be moved in any direction during operation.

Abstract: A seat frame assembly for a motor vehicle comprises a seat frame and a seat back frame. The seat frame is constructed and arranged to have a seat cushion mounted thereon in overlying relation. The seat back frame is connected with the seat frame and has a pair of spaced metallic vertical support portions at opposite sides thereof, the seat back frame constructed and arranged to have a seat back cushion mounted thereon. At least one of the vertical support portions are formed from a pair of telescoping tubular blanks including an elongated inner metal blank formed into an integrally formed vertical member of the at least one vertical portion extending from a lower portion of the seat back frame connected with the seat frame to an upper end of the seat back frame and a relatively shorter outer metal blank formed into a sleeve rigidly secured in surrounding relation to the lower portion of the vertical support member. The outer blank and inner blank are formed into the sleeve and the vertical member respectively during a hydoforming process in which the inner blank is expanded so that an outer surface thereof is moved into peripheral contact with an inner surface of the outer blank and the inner blank and the outer blank are expanded into peripheral contact with die surfaces defining the exterior surfaces of the one vertical support portion.

Abstract: A vehicle seat assembly includes a seat frame structure having a riser and a movable portion movable in fore and aft directions with respect to a longitudinal axis of a vehicle. A seat cushion assembly including an open-cell foam seat cushion is mounted on the movable portion. The seat cushion includes a plurality of air channels therein extending from a bottom surface to a top surface thereof. The seat cushion assembly includes a seat cushion cover material constructed and arranged to permit air to pass therethrough. A seat back frame is coupled to the movable portion of the frame structure. A seat back pad assembly is mounted on the seat back frame. Air flow directing structure is adapted to be coupled to a source of forced air and has a portion constructed and arranged to be mounted on the floor of the vehicle. The air flow directing structure is operatively associated with the seat cushion assembly so as to direct forced air (1) throught the open cells of the seat cushion so as to change a temperature of said seat cushion, and (2) through the channels in the seat cushion and through the seat cushion cover material.
