Abstract:
A milk product including a level of vitamin E per serving of said product which can conveniently provide at least 100 IU of vitamin E per day to an individual ingesting the product. The vitamin E is uniformly microdispersed throughout the product, and ingestion of at least 100 IU of vitamin E per day in the product is sufficient to cause the fasting plasma vitamin E/cholesterol ratio in human subjects to be elevated at least 50% above the basal fasting level of vitamin E measured in the same subjects consuming no vitamin E dietary supplements. A method for elevating the plasma vitamin E level at least 50% in human subjects is also described. The method includes ingesting a milk product as described.
Abstract:
Stabilized peanut butter and other vegetable kernel butters, and vegetable kernel butter-containing food compositions such as peanut butter-containing food composition are described. The stabilized peanut butter or other vegetable kernel butter include a mixture of ground seed or nuts, and between approximately 0.25% and 4% by weight of microparticulate silicon dioxide (silicon dioxide measured as the anhydrous weight content of SiO.sub.2), and/or between approximately 0.25% and 5% by weight of propylene glycol. Also described is a method for preventing the spontaneous (natural) separation of oil and ground kernel solids in vegetable kernel butter or a vegetable kernel butter-containing food composition by combining between approximately 0.25% and 4% by weight of microparticulate silicon dioxide and/or between approximately 0.25% and 5% by weight of propylene glycol with the vegetable kernel butter.
Abstract:
A specimen vial storage assembly is described which includes multiple specimen vials, a rigid support member, and a flexible sheet storage device. The rigid support member is substantially uniform in height when placed upon a horizontal surface, and includes at least one upwardly facing first opening whose outer perimeter is defined by at least one perimeter support wall of substantially uniform height. The flexible sheet storage device includes a flexible elastomeric sheet material penetrated by an array of sized second openings which can frictionally bind and secure the specimen vials. The storage sheet device is removably placed upon, and supported by the upper surface of the perimeter support wall of the rigid support member, so that when a specimen vial is pushed downward through one of the second openings and into the first opening, a portion of the specimen vial is frictionally held by the storage sheet device.
Abstract:
A cell culture plate which contains cells incubated in a liquid medium held in sample wells formed and arranged over the surface of the plate, is covered and sealed with a waterproof adhesive sealing membrane which excludes microbial contaminants, but which is functionally permeable to oxygen and carbon dioxide gases. The membrane allows cellular respiration to continue, with the transmission rate of oxygen and carbon dioxide through the membrane being essentially uniform from well to well over the surface of the plate.
Abstract:
A method for specimen identification is described, employing marking or printing of a label for placing on a cryogenic storage vial or other container which must withstand contact with the liquid and/or vapor phases of liquid nitrogen at a temperature of approximately -196.degree. C. The marking or printing also resists the ice and moisture which condenses on the container when it is removed from the liquid nitrogen. The method includes the steps of providing a sized portion of a pressure-sensitive adhesive label having a waterproof thermoplastic facestock material with a markable and print-retaining waterproof upper surface and a waterproof adhesive-coated lower surface. The facestock material is capable of being stretched at room temperature at least 10% in the machine direction and at least 10% in the transverse direction without breaking, whereby the facestock and the adhesive can remain united, and also bonded to the container during and after contact with the liquid nitrogen.
Abstract:
A treatment system to treat microbially contaminated water and provide a resultant product which is odor and taste-free is disclosed. The system comprises separate quantities of hypochlorite and peroxide generating chemicals. The system is used by first admixing the hypochlorite-containing solution with water and after an interval adding the peroxide-generating material. The peroxide rapidly reacts with and destroys the hypochlorite along with its taste and odor. In a most preferred embodiment, the system includes a third pre-measured quantity of a reducing agent, such as sodium thiosulfate, which may be added following the peroxide treatment step to destroy any hypochlorite-generated chloramine compounds.

Electrophoresis apparatus with a gel support configured and arranged to hold a gel, a buffer chamber configured and arranged to hold a buffer, with the buffer contacting each end of the gel, and a buffer shaper configured to be positioned near the gel support and in contact with the buffer. The buffer shaper is positioned nearer to one portion of the gel support than to another portion of the gel support to cause the depth of buffer between the gel support and the buffer shaper to vary along the length or width of the gel support and buffer shaper.

Blended cholesterol-reduced animal fat and vegetable oil which are combined in a proportion such that the weight ratio of linoleic acid (18:2) content divided by myristic acid (14:2) content is between 2 and 9 inclusive.In addition, cholesterol-reduced animal fat can be blended with cholesterol-reduced fish oil to stabilize the fish oil against air-oxidation at room temperature.

A vortex adapter, and method of its use, suitable for holding a plurality of tubes to be vortexed, comprising: an elongated handle; a base fixed to the handle, the base comprising a plurality of holding means, wherein a tube can be positioned within each holding means; and a nipple fixed to the base, wherein the nipple can be inserted into a cup of a vortexing machine, and wherein when the nipple is inserted into the cup and the cup is caused to vibrate the tubes held within the holding means are subject to vortex forces from the cup.
Abstract:
A method for removing liquid from a gel matrix including the steps of providing a hydrophobic water vapor-permeable membrane adapted to transmit water vapor and to resist passage of liquid water by capillary diffusion. The membrane and gel matrix are contacted together and subjected to a vacuum to remove water vapor from the gel matrix through the membrane. Liquid is removed from the gel matrix, and the gel matrix simultaneously adheres to the membrane.
