Abstract: A continuous passive motion (CPM) device for the synovial joints and surrounding soft tissue of the human body, more specifically to the upper extremities. The device includes an upper arm support suitably fixed to a drive actuator and a adjustable forearm support attached to the rotational center of the drive actuator so that pivotal movement of the output causes the forearm support to pivot about an axis parallel to a longitudinal axis of the forearm suppor t. Various cuffs are provided so a patient can secure their upper arm above t he elbow and the upper forearm below the elbow to the device with the actuator located either forward of or behind the elbow. The rotational motion of pronation and supination is created by aligning the rotational center of the actuator output with the anatomical rotational center of the forearm. The rotational centers are concentric to minimize stresses on the affected limb. The relative rotationa l motion between the upper support and forearm support creates the passive anatomical motion of pronation and supination.

Abstract: A method of ultrasonic bone-therapy subjects a bone to an ultrasonic excitation pulse signal of finite duration, supplied to a transducer next to the bone, and involving a sinusoidal signal in the ultrasonic region to approximately 2 MHz peculiarly modulated by a sinusoidal signal with frequency between about 0 Hz and about 25 kHz; the excitation signal is repeated in the range of 1 to 5000 Hz. The exposure time for therapy is chosen to be in the range of 5 minutes to 1 hour, for 1 to 3 times a day, for a period of days as necessary for healing or for promoting bone growth and ingrowth. An apparatus for implementing the above method for ultrasonic bone therapy is disclosed comprising a transducer having a transmitting and a receiving element, a special waveform signal generator, and a computer for performing the necessary operations defining a preferred treatment regime.

Abstract: Non-invasive therapeutic treatment and/or quantitative evaluation of bone tissue are performed in vivo, by subjecting bone to an ultrasonic acoustic signal pulse of finite duration, and involving a composite sine-wave signal consisting of plural discrete frequencies that are spaced in the ultrasonic region to approximately 2 MHz; the excitation signal is repeated substantially in the range 1 to 1000 Hz. In a quantitative evaluation, the composite sine-wave signal is supplied to one of two transducers on opposite sides of the bone, and the signal received by the other transducer is processed (a) to sequentially average the most recently received given number of successive signals to obtain an averaged per-pulse signal and (b) to produce a Fourier transform of the averaged per-pulse bone-transmitted signal. In a separate operation not involving the bone, the same transducers are subjected to the same excitation, reception and processing, wherein the transducers are exposed to a medium of known acoustic properties and path length, all to the end of producing a reference Fourier transform which is processed with the Fourier transform of the bone-transmitted signal, to yield an evaluation or measurement. In a therapeutic treatment, the transducer supplied by the composite sine-wave signal is thus supplied for a period or periods of time, and with a magnitude, as may be prescribed by the physician for a given patient.

Abstract: The present invention provides continuous passive motion (CPM) devices for joints. An ankle CPM device includes a lower leg support attached at its lower end to a semi-circular track. An actuator slides along the track and can be locked in any desired position on the track. A shaft is pivotally connected at one end thereof to the actuator and a shoe is attached at the other end thereof. When the actuator is positioned at the bottom of the track the ankle joint of the patient undergoes inversion/eversion motion. When the motor housing is rotated 90 DEG and positioned near the top of the track plantar/dorsi flexion movement is obtained. A combination of both types of joint movement are obtained for the actuator in intermediate positions. A wrist CPM device includes a brace for the forearm attached to a semi-circular track on which an actuator is mounted. A hand grip is mounted on a semi-circular bracket and a shaft extends between the actuator and a coupling slidably mounted on the semi-circular bracket. With the actuator positioned below the forearm, when the actuator pivots the shaft the wrist joint undergoes ulnar/radial deviation movement and when the motor is rotated 90 DEG and positioned at the side of the arm extension/flexion movement of the wrist joint is obtained. Positioning the actuator in intermediate positions produces wrist movement which is a combination of extension/flexion and ulnar/radial deviation of the wrist joint.

Abstract: An agonist of a non-proteolytically activated thrombin receptor can be used in a method for treating peripheral arterial disease. The agonist can be a thrombin peptide derivative. In some embodiments, the peripheral arterial disease is characterized by intermittent claudication. The thrombin peptide derivatives to be used in the methods can have amino acid sequences similar to a region of thrombin. Usually, the thrombin peptide derivatives are 12-23 amino acid residues in length. In some cases, the thrombin peptide derivatives are dimers, and in particular, dimers that result from formation of a disulfide bond between two cysteine residues of peptide monomers.
