Abstract: The present invention relates to compositions comprising a derivative of 5 - aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), e.g. an ester of 5-ALA or a skin compatible salt thereof. Further, the invention relates to use of such compositions in methods of cosmetic or therapeutic treatment, particularly in methods of improving or otherwise enhancing the appearance of the skin. The compositions comprise 2% by weight or less of a derivative of 5-ALA, 70% by weight or more of water, 2-25% by weight of at least one liquid carrier and one or more emulsifiers. A container comprises a first compartment comprising a derivative of 5-ALA and at least one liquid carrier and a second compartment comprising water, one or more emulsifiers and optionally at least one liquid carrier. The composition is obtained by mixing the contents of the two compartments.
