    Abstract: In the present invention, there is disclosed a laminated structure intended for use in laminated glass comprising a plastic sheet (20) with a thickness of 0.013 do 0.38 mm and carrying an energy reflective coating (22). Said plastic sheet (20) is further provided with an integrated adhesive thermoplastic layer (18) for adhering the layered product to a surface of a glass sheet wherein said thermoplastic adhesive layer (18) thickness ranges within 0.013 do 0.076 mm. There is further suggested a composite containing the above-indicated laminated structure and at least two glass sheets. One glass sheet (12) is adhered to the laminated structure by means of a thermoplastic adhesive layer (18) forming a part of the laminated structure and being 0.013 to 0.076 mm thick, and the second glass sheet (26) is adhered from the laminated structure opposite side by means of an intermediate adhesive layer (24). Disclosed is also a method for forming the above-described composite comprising: obtaining a 0.013 mm to 0.38 mm thick sheet (20) of flexible plastic having a top surface carrying an energy-reflective coating (22) adhered to said top surface; applying a layer of a solution comprising poly(vinylbutyral) in solvent to the energy-reflective coating (22), removing solvent from the layer of solution forming thus a thermoplastic adhesive layer (18).

    Abstract: Localized heating of a window, such as a vehicle windshield or sidelight, is provided by dividing an optical coating that is electrically conductive into high and low heating zones. While the conductive coating covers substantially the entirety of the window, the coating is patterned to establish a preselected heating power density pattern. In one application, bus-to-bus dimensions are kept short and opposite polarity high heating zones are placed in a side-by-side relationship, so that the major portion of the window is left unheated and the bus connections may be placed along the same window edge. In another application, the bus-to-bus dimensions are significantly larger, but power concentration is provided by a pattern of isolation lines that narrow the dimensions of current flow through a zone in which heating is desired.

    Abstract: A solar control member utilizes a combination of layers that include spaced apart titanium nitride layers to selectively transmit a higher percentage of visible light than near infrared energy, with a low visible light reflection. The titanium nitride layers are spaced apart by a distance that promotes optical decoupling with respect to occurrence of constructive and destructive interference of visible light propagating between the two titanium nitride layers. In one embodiment, the titanium nitride layers are spaced apart by a laminating adhesive layer. In another embodiment, the titanium nitride layers are formed on opposite sides of a substrate. The ratio of transmission at the wavelength of 550 nm to transmission at the wavelength of 1500 is at least 1.25. Each titanium nitride layer is sputter deposited. Care is taken to ensure that each layer does not become too metallic and to ensure that excessive oxygen is not incorporated into the layer. Thus, the nitrogen flow rate and the linespeed are controlled. Sputtering occurs at a fast rate using high powers and a minimum acceptable nitrogen flow, while minimizing background contamination.

    Abstract: The adhesion to plastic substrates of thick layers of functional metals having an oxide heat of formation that is greater than -40,000 calories/gram atom of metal, such as silver, copper, gold, and the like, is improved if a thin layer of a metal having an oxide heat of formation of less than -50,000 calories/gram atom of metal is present as an adhesion-promoting primer layer. When the primer layer metal has a melting point greater than 1100 DEG C., it should be present as the metal or as a substoichiometric oxide. When the primer layer metal has a melting point less than 1100 DEG C., it may be present as the metal, as a substoichiometric oxide, or as a full stoichiometric oxide. Processes for preparing these materials using sputter-depositing and reflectors incorporating these materials are also disclosed.

    Abstract: Multipane, insultating glazing structures having exceptional thermal insulation performance are provided. The novel multipane structures comprise two substantially parallel rigid glazing sheets spaced apart by an interior spacer of a low thermal conductivity, closed cell, foamed polymer. In a preferred embodiment, the glazing sheets are present in a four-pane structure filled with an inert gas and sealed with a gas-impermeable, continous tape overlaying a curable, high modulus sealant. Methods for manufacturing the novel glazing structures are disclosed as well.
