Abstract: 122,045. Stewart, W. J., Woolcock, J., and Kruse, H. Jan. 17, 1918. Concrete vessels.-Reinforced-concrete ships are built up of assembled pre-cast complete transverse frames a, Figs. 1 and 4, formed with apertures b through which is laid the longitudinal reinforcements of the stringers, keelsons, deck beams, and other longitudinal members which are all cast in situ, the hull being then completed in situ with its reinforcement interlinked with the frames to form a monolithic structure. Stout transverse or fairing bars g are laid parallel with the edges of the frames a and connected thereto by linking elements d in the form of loops, ae shown, or loose ends bent round the bars g. These fairing bars support the longitudinal bars of the inner and outer meshwork reinforcement, and these in turn support lighter transverse bars. The pre-cast frames are supported on concrete pads h, Fig. 5, recessed therein, as shown, and grouted through a hole h . These pads become incorporated in the bottom slab when the same is cast in situ.

Abstract: 111,099. Stewart, W. Nov. 10, 1916, [Convention date]. Couplings. -The spigot and socket unions of electric lamps, domestic irons, toasters, &c. are locked against disconnexion by means of a ring 12 having opposite slots 13 and a spring 15, the ends of which protrude inwardly and engage the bayonet slots 20 of the connexion. The ring is placed over the slotted member 19 of the connexion with its slots 13 alined with the slots 20 as shown in Fig. 5. Insertion of the pins 22 on the member 17 into the slots 20 rotates the ring which allows the ends of the spring 14 to engage the slots 20 or openings specially provided. A sleeve 22 is positioned so as to surround the parts of the connexion and prevents the disconnexion of the parts by manipulation of the spring unless the lamp 18 is fractured and the holder 23 deformed to permit the removal of the sleeve. In place of the ring, a pair of rotatably slidable members attached to the part 19 may be employed.

Abstract: 101,933. Stewart, W. May 12, 1016. Cutters.-Relates to wire-cutters intended for attachment to a bayonet and adapted to be operated by a thrust on the wire. According tc the invention, the cutter comprises two blades 1, 2, pivoted together, having depending tails 4, 5, one of which is pivoted to a fixed pivot 10 and the other to the end of a swinging arm 7. The blades are mounted in a casing provided with a cover-plate 13, Figs. 4 and 5, on which is a sleeve 15 adapted to slip over the bayonet. The sleeve has inwardly projecting springs 17 to grip the blade, and the casing is locked to the bayonet by a spring catch 20, Fig. 4

Abstract: 15,619. Stewart, W. G. Nov. 5. Shuttleless looms ; smallware looms.-In a loom for weaving tapes and braid, each weft needle 21, Figs. 1 and 2, is arranged and operated so that it first projects the weft threads transversely through the warp sheds, then moves towards the fell of the cloth, and then transversely through the shed so as to beat up or move the successive picks of weft threads into position, thereby dispensing with the beating-up reed. A second needle 22 takes a loop 67, Fig. 8, of the weft thread 60 and draws it back through the previously-formed loop 62, which is shed from the needle 22 as it recedes through a groove in the bar 14, over which the woven fabric parses. The needles 21, 22 are carried by bars 24, 25 slidably arranged on the breast beam 8 one above the other, the needles 21 projecting slantingly from the carrier at one side of the cloth, while the needles 22 are arranged on the opposite side of the cloth and project horizontally. The bar 24 is moved longitudinally against the action of a spring 37 by a cam 28 on an inclined shaft 29 driven by bevelgearing from a shaft 33, and cams 39, mounted on a shaft 40 driven from the shaft 29, move the bar 24 transversely towards and from the fell of the cloth. The needles 22 are reciprocated longitudinally against the action of springs 47 by cams 46 on the shaft 40. Each weft needle 21 has a raised portion 57 adjacent to its eye to permit a part of the adjacent needle 22 to pass between the body of the needle 21 and the thread 60 extending from its eye to the fabric. The chain of loops formed by the needle 22 forms a selvedge at one edge of the fabric, and a selvedge is formed at the opposite edge by the loops which connect the adjacent warp sheds. The weft thread 48, Fig, 2, passes from a spool 49 to a pair of tension disks 52 on a bracket 53 on the bar 24 and through the eye of a spring take-up arm 54 to the eye of the needle 21.
