Abstract: 122,045. Stewart, W. J., Woolcock, J., and Kruse, H. Jan. 17, 1918. Concrete vessels.-Reinforced-concrete ships are built up of assembled pre-cast complete transverse frames a, Figs. 1 and 4, formed with apertures b through which is laid the longitudinal reinforcements of the stringers, keelsons, deck beams, and other longitudinal members which are all cast in situ, the hull being then completed in situ with its reinforcement interlinked with the frames to form a monolithic structure. Stout transverse or fairing bars g are laid parallel with the edges of the frames a and connected thereto by linking elements d in the form of loops, ae shown, or loose ends bent round the bars g. These fairing bars support the longitudinal bars of the inner and outer meshwork reinforcement, and these in turn support lighter transverse bars. The pre-cast frames are supported on concrete pads h, Fig. 5, recessed therein, as shown, and grouted through a hole h . These pads become incorporated in the bottom slab when the same is cast in situ.

Abstract: 115,797. Stewart, W. J., and Woolcock, J. May 16, 1917. Concrete vessels.-In reinforced concrete ships &c. a bond for connecting a pair of single reinforcing rods or groups of rods comprises two equal wire ties j, j , Fig. 3, with the ends bent at right angles, and placed on opposite sides of the rods. The adjacent ends are then bent to encircle the rods and are twisted together as shown in Fig. 1. The reinforcing rods of a rib for a wall or ship may be connected together by such ties which also may encircle certain of the rods in the main wall or skin reinforcement, that shown being of the kind detscribed in Specification 115,695.

Abstract: 21,851. Stewart, W. J., and Woolcock, J. Nov. 2. Reinforced concrete. -The reinforcing- bars of concrete piles, pillars, beams, &c. are bonded in sets of three by means of wire ties a, Figs. 3 and 5, the ends c of the wire being twisted together to tighten the loop b on the middle bar of the set as shown in Fig. 1, and the extremities being formed into a fork. The ties may be opened out as shown in Fig. 8 to support the bars at shorter distances. Struts such as flat bars h, k, Fig. 1, may be used between the main bars. According to the Provisional Specification, the ties may be bent completely around each bar and may embrace more than three bars.

Abstract: 114,221. Stewart, W. J., and Woolcock, J. April 13, 1917. Piles.-In an extended tube pile, the normal reinforcing units comprise longitudinal rods provided with means for obtaining anchorage at the bottom of the pile and extended at their upper ends to receive continuation lengths of transverse bracing, which are formed as independent cagelike sections slidably movable into position on the reds. These cage-like sections comprise two or more transverse links b , Fig. 2, wound to encircle independently some or all of the longitudinal rods, connected by helical windings c' the pitch of which is maintained by two or more thin rods g; the fixed transverse bracing on the lower part of the pile is of similar form. The main longitudinal reinforcing-rods may have inclined lower portions with simple or looped hooked ends a , Figs. 9 and 10, to engage resiliently a ledge d' on the pile shoe; an annular projection d may also be provide to prevent accidental disengagement. Where the lower end of the pile is in firm ground and no transverse bracing is required at this part, two or more of the main longitudinal reinforcing-rods , Fig. 7, are connected to depending rods i by eye-links l and binding o; the lower ends of the rods i extend to or adjacent to the pile shoe and are inturned and connected to plates p, Fig. 6. The Provisional Specification also states that the longitudinal reinforcing-rods may be attached to an anchor with two or three preferably hinged prongs for engaging the shoe.

Abstract: 113,375. Stewart, W. J., and Woolcock, J. May 2, 1917. Piles.-In forming concrete piles, reinforced or otherwise, by driving a tube, filling the tube with plastic concrete, and then withdrawing the tube, means inserted in the tube before filling are withdrawn after filling so as to break up any arch in the concrete and also to relieve friction between the concrete and tube during removal of the latter. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the disturbing means comprise pivoted triangular links e, e carried by a tube &c. C. The form shown in Fig. 2, for use where a central member forms an obstruction in the pile tube, comprises tubes h, h assisted by a cross-piece i and carrying pivoted diamond links j. Where the concrete is inserted in a semi-plastic state, water may be added through the tubes c, h, h , which may be perforated, during their removal.

Abstract: 5192. Stewart, W. J., and Woolcock, J. Feb. 28. Reinforced-concrete columns, beams, and walls; reinforced concrete. - Bonds or shear members consist of steel ribbon a, Fig. 3, with their ends slitted longitudinally and the separate parts d bent around the main bars band secured by being passed through slotted collars c, shown in plan in Fig. 4, and then bent over. Fig. 5 shows a beam reinforcement in which the members a occur alternately on opposite sides of the bent-up bar f. Fig. 6 shows a wall reinforcement in which the longitudinal bars h are supported by the bonds a. For columns, a spiral winding i, Fig. 7, is clipped at its ends to the main bars; diagonal or cross ties a' may be added.

Abstract: 28,652. Stewart, W. J. Dec. 15, Piles; caissons.-A thin shell 1 is provided with a strong annular or conical shoe 2 secured tc it and having a shoulder 3, upon which is driven a heavy tube 4 closely fitting and supporting the thin shell 1. When the outer shell has been driven the required depth, the inner tube is withdrawn and the shell is filled with concrete. A modification is described in which the driving-tube 4 is short, and is driven by a plate covering the upper end.
