    Abstract: Coupling device for coupling waveguides for electromagnetic waves of a specific wavelength less than 300 micrometres, for example an optical beam splitter, comprising an interference section of the multimode type. Connected to said section, on one side, are a first waveguide element and on another side a second and a third waveguide element, the second and the third waveguide element and the interference section being situated symmetrically with respect to the first waveguide element, and the length of the interference section being such that a phase difference of 180 degree results over said length between the fundamental mode of a wave propagated through said section at a particular wavelength and the second mode of said wave. The interference section and the waveguide elements preferably comprise a layer of semiconductor material of the III-V type, in particular a layer of InGaAsP between layers comprising InP or GaAs.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a localization method, according to which a light beam emitted by a modulable light source impinges on a photosensitive layer at a particular location and the impingement location of that beam on that layer is derived from two photocurrents of opposite direction, which are generated by that beam in that layer and which are converted into modulated signals. These signals are alternately processed and used to alternately modulate the light source. The invention also relates to an apparatus for implementing this method which, for the purpose of measuring the photocurrents, comprises a commutator circuit by means of which one of the photocurrents at a time is conducted to a current-to- voltage converter, and further comprises a voltage- controlled oscillator in series with said current-to- voltage converter, the light source being modulated by the output signal of the said oscillator.

    Abstract: The method is for mfg. glass fibre branch and has first two or more glass fibres prepared and positioned next to each other over a part of their length. The fibres are welded to each other by heating the parts against each other after which they are further heated with the aid of arc-welding electrodes. The electrodes over that part where they are welded together are subjected to a tensile force so that the core of the fibre is constricted and the finally obtained branch is attached inside a housing. The arc flame extends in the length direction of the fibres and the fibres need heating before welding and takes place by an arc between the same direction as or transverse to the electrodes. The electrodes are provided in a pair and movable along the welded section, in an Argon or Nitrogen gas atmosphere, or a mixt. of the two gases.

    Abstract: The mechanism for transmitting a rotary motion comprises a first element (11) whose internal surface is in at length simple-point contact with a second element (23) consisting of a flexible endless strip. This is pressed into single-point engagement with the first element by an internal third element (5) such that a force can be transmitted in tangential direction from the third to the first element. The second element is integral with a gas-impermeable wall (31, 7) which hermetically isolates the first from the third element. The second element may be provided with external teeth locally meshing with internal teeth in the first element. The second and third elements may, alternatively have their contact surfaces in a friction material or magnetically attractive.
