Abstract: Disclosed is a process for oxidizing ethane to acetic acid which comprises feeding ethane and a recycle gas to a fluidized bed reaction zone containing fluidized particulate solid oxidation catalyst, feeding a molecular oxygen-containing gas separately from said ethane to said reaction zone so that said molecular oxygen-containing gas first mixes with the major portion of the combustible hydrocarbon feed gases within the fluidized bed, said process including the steps of (1) cooling the gaseous effluent from the reaction zone, (2) separating most of the acetic acid in liquid form from the effluent gases, leaving a gaseous stream containing nearly all of the carbon oxides contained in said effluent, (3) purging a small portion of said gaseous stream and recycling most of said gaseous stream as part of the feed to said reaction zone, wherein said purging serves to prevent build-up of carbon oxides in the reaction zone, and said recycling serves to maintain a high proportion of carbon oxides in said reaction zone gases, thus aiding in moderating the temperature elevating effect of the highly exothermic oxidation reaction in said reaction zone.

Abstract: Acrylonitrile is prepared by reacting a mixture of propylene, ammonia and oxygen in the vapour phase in the presence of a bismuth, tin or antimony salt of molybdic or phosphomolybdic acid or bismuth phosphotungstate and in the presence of added hydrogen cyanide in amount 0.01-0.2, preferably about 0.1, moles per mole of propylene. Water may be present in the vapour phase reaction medium. Preferably at least part of the hydrogen cyanide separated from the reaction products is recycled. Specification 867,438 is referred to.

PREFERABLY, METHANOL IS INTRODUCED INTO THE REACTOR AT BELOW ITS COKING TEMPERATURE. IN PARTICULAR, WHEN AN OXYGEN LEAN FLUID BED CATALYST IS UTILIZED, AN ADDITIONAL OXYGEN CONTAINING GAS IS INTRODUCED INTO THE REACTION AT A DISTANCE BETWEEN ABOUT 0.2-0.36 METERS FROM THE METHANOL FEED LOCATION.

Abstract: An acoustic transducer (102) having a curved surface (102) to match the inner (108) or outer surfaces of a target surface (100) such as a cylindrical borehole tubular is disclosed. A sequence of excitation pulses causes the transducer to launch a series of high-frequency pulses (308) toward the tubular. The characteristics of the tubular surfaces, including the location, area and depth of any corrosion pits on the tubular surfaces, are determined from a full echo waveform. A rule-based Expert System analyzes the full waveform of the echo pulses returned from the tubular to determine the most likely characteristics of the surfaces which produce the full echo waveform. More specifically, the Expert System uses expertise about the acoustic properties of the target medium, as well as constraints chosen by an expert, to determine which signal structures are informational and which signal structures are confounding. The present invention also involves preprocessing and transmitting information. The present invention reduces the absolute amount of information that is transmitted without reducing the amount of meaningful information that is conveyed. The present invention transmits more meaningful information than conventional transmission systems. It also reduces the amount of information processing at the destination.
