    Abstract: The system for transmitting compatible high definition TV signals by using the freq. band separation and sub-sampling techniques comprises an A/D converter (1) for digitalizing the luminance signal (Y) and chrominance signals (R-Y,B-Y), and ITLC circuit (2) for condensing the time base. A band separator (3) divides the signals into upper and lower freq. bands. A motion vector sensor (4) determines a vector of the lower band signals and a processor (5) processes the upper band signals. A delay circuit (6) delays the lower band signals which are then added by an adder (8) to the vector. An audio encoder (9) codes the audio signals which are added by an adder (7) to the processed signals. The summed signals are converted to analog by D/A converters (10,11), filtered by low band pass filters (12,13) and modulated by a delay modulator (14) and then transmitted (15).
