    Abstract: PURPOSE: A gearshift lever in a vehicle is provided to improve manipulation efficiency and to reduce noise by moving the gearshift lever in a non-contact manner. CONSTITUTION: An LED(light emitting diode) is arranged in each shift level and light receiving transistors are located in the lower end of the LED in parallel. A gearshift lever is located between LEDs and the light receiving transistors. A collector terminal of the light receiving transistor is connected to an ECU(electronic control unit)(10) to check if a corresponding gearshift lever is selected. The ECU recognizes that the gearshift lever is in a parking range as the light receiving transistors are turned off since light doesn't pass through between the LEDs and the light receiving transistors when a driver moves the gearshift lever to the parking range. At the same time, the ECU recognizes that the transistors are turned on since light passes through between the LEDs and the light receiving transistors when the driver moves the gearshift lever to other ranges(R,N,D,L). Thus, the durability of the gearshift lever is improved without generating surge noise and the driver easily manipulates the gearshift lever by being informed of the corresponding gearshift lever in a non-contact manner.
