Abstract:
Vinylidene chloride is removed from 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane (HCFC-141b) by contacting the HCFC-141b in the vapor phase with chlorine in the presence of ultraviolet light providing an exposure up to about 50 watts-hour/kg.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a fire retardant compound comprising at least one fibrous layer comprising a network of fibers (12) such as high strength polyethylene or aramid fibers in a matrix such as a blend of a vinyl ester and a polyurethane, and a fire retardant layer (14) comprised of a particulate fire retardant material which decompose and heating to a gaseous material such as magnesium hydroxide dispersed in a matrix comprised of a relatively high char yield resin such as a cured phenolic cyanate resin.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a high durability catalyst for treating automotive exhaust gas which produces a minimal amount of hydrogen sulfide and is essentially free of cerium oxide and which comprises a support consisting substantially of delta alumina, an effective amount of a promoter consisting essentially of barium oxide and, optionally, lanthanum oxide, and, effective amounts of the noble metals palladium and rhodium deposited on the support. In an additional embodiment of the invention,m the support may contain delta alumina, and, optionally zirconia, and the catalyst may contain an overlayer containing delta or gamma alumina, and optionally, zirconia. Effective amounts of the noble metals palladium and rhodium may be deposited on the support and/or on the overlayer. In another aspect, the invention resides in a process for treating the exhaust gases from automotive engines to remove carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides, and to minimize the production of hydrogen sulfide.
Abstract:
In a pawl and ratchet clutch (60) for an air turbine starter, a single torsion shaft (110) simultaneously forces each of a plurality of pawls (80) into engagement with the ratchet (65). The torsion shaft (110) is coupled to a cam (100) having radially extending arms each with an involute surface (105) in contact with an involute surface (86) on a radially extending member of one of the pawls (80). The torsion shaft (110) is co-axially disposed within the clutch so as to be readily accessible, which permits its twist to be adjusted without dismantling the starter.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a composition for use in refrigeration and air-conditioning comprising: a) at least one refrigerant selected from the group consisting of hydrofluorocarbon, hydrochlorofluorocarbon, fluorocarbon, and chlorofluorocarbon; and b) a sufficient amount to provide lubrication of at least one polyoxyalkylene glycol. The polyoxyalkylene glycol has at least one pendant non-terminal perfluorinated alkyl group on its hydrocarbon polymer backbone. The polyoxyalkylene glycol is terminated with a group selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, and fluoroalkyl. The polyoxyalkylene glycol has a molecular weight of about 300 to about 4,000 and a viscosity of about 5 to about 300 centistokes at 37 °C. The polyoxyalkylene glycol is miscible in combination with the refrigerant in the range between about -40 °C and at least about +20 °C.
Abstract:
A servomotor (10) having partition means (26) for separating a frist chamber (11) from a second chamber (15). The partition has a hub with passages therein connecting the first and second chambers with each other and to the atmosphere. The partition means has a plurality of concentric annular ribs (164) and radial ribs (166) to strengthen a radial disc (160) that extends from the hub. A valve (150-152) carried in said hub controls the communication of turbulent free air to said second chamber to create a pressure differential for moving said partition and developing an ouptut force in response to an operator input. This same pressure differential acts on a diaphragm (170) connected to the radial disc to seal a plurality of openings (168) in the radial disc to assure that the pressure differential is not reduced by leakage through the openings.
Abstract:
The invention relates to novel compositions of methyl isobutyl ketoxime-N-(m-isopropenyl- alpha , alpha -dimethyl benzyl) carbamate, methyl amyl ketoxime-N-(m-isopropenyl- alpha , alpha -dimethyl benzyl) carbamate, di-isobutyl ketoxime-N-(m-isopropenyl- alpha , alpha -dimethyl benzyl) carbamate and di-isopropyl ketoxime-N-(m-isopropenyl- alpha , alpha -dimethyl benzyl) carbamate which are useful in a variety of industrial applications including coatings, adhesives and tackifiers, textile fibers and finishes, speciality plastics and rubber applications and agricultural chemical formulations.
Abstract:
A cell has a body containing at least one electroactive material. The body has both a positive electrical connecting means (1, 4) and a negative electrical connecting means (2, 3) on each of opposite ends of said body. Each of the negative and positive electrical connecting means is positioned such that the cell can be alternatively directly connected electrically in series or in parallel to form a battery power source.
Abstract:
A turbine engine (10) includes axially adjacent compressor (35) and turbine rotors (37) which define a groove (52) therebetween. Into the groove between the rotors radially extends an annular interstage seal assembly (30). The seal assembly (30) includes a thermally insulative cellular wall structure (72) which resists thermal and pressure included distortions. At its radially inner extent the cellular wall (72) defines a seal structure in cooperation with the rotors, and also carries heat shield members (94) on an axial fore disposed toward the turbine rotor (37).
Abstract:
An automatically adjustable strut (60) is mounted adjacent a drum brake (10) wheel cylinder (20) and strut forks (62, 66) bear against a pair of brake shoes (12, 14) and a parking brake lever (50). The strut (60) extends automatically according to wear of the brake shoes (12, 14) and comprises a nut-and-bolt system operated by a pawl (75) engaging teeth (84) of a nut (80). The pawl (75) is part of a clip-on automatic adjuster strut lever (100) mounted resiliently upon a body (68) of the strut (60). The strut lever (100) includes a loading arm (108) which resiliently engages the body (68) of the strut (60), so that proper operational loading is effected by the pawl (75) upon the nut (80). The strut lever (100) also includes a spring lever arm (120) which engages a rocker lever (90) that moves the lever arm (120) and pawl (75) when the brake (10) is released toward an at-rest position, and then permits movement of the pawl (75) in an opposite direction when the brake (10) is applied. The strut lever (100) is mounted slidably onto the body (68) of the strut (60) by way of a base member (104) having an opening (106) whose circumference has a portion (113) received within a groove (65) in the body (68) of the strut (60).
