Abstract:
The present invention provides a composition for use in refrigeration and air-conditioning comprising: a) at least one refrigerant selected from the group consisting of hydrofluorocarbon, hydrochlorofluorocarbon, fluorocarbon, and chlorofluorocarbon; and b) a sufficient amount to provide lubrication of at least one polyoxyalkylene glycol. The polyoxyalkylene glycol has at least one pendant non-terminal perfluorinated alkyl group on its hydrocarbon polymer backbone. The polyoxyalkylene glycol is terminated with a group selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, and fluoroalkyl. The polyoxyalkylene glycol has a molecular weight of about 300 to about 4,000 and a viscosity of about 5 to about 300 centistokes at 37 °C. The polyoxyalkylene glycol is miscible in combination with the refrigerant in the range between about -40 °C and at least about +20 °C.
Abstract:
A non-aqueous cleaning process uses an organic solvent for removing soil or surface contamination from contaminated articles such as printed circuit boards which are cleaned by immersion into a sump compartment of a cleaning tank contaning the organic cleaning solvent. The organic solvent is preferably a hydrocarbon solvent. The cleaned articles, now coated with the organic cleaning solvent, are then disposed in a rinsing sump containing a fluorocarbon based rinsing solvent having an affinity for the organic cleaning solvent. The organic solvent is thus removed from the articles which are then dried without waste water as in a conventional solvent vapor degreasing solvent process.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a novel lubricating composition comprising a polyoxyalkylene glycol having a cap of a fluorinated alkyl group on at least one end thereof. The composition has a molecular weight between 300 and 3,000, a viscosity of about 5 to about 150 centistokes at 37 DEG C., and a viscosity index of at least 20. The composition is miscible in combination with tetrafluoroethane in the range between -40 DEG C. and at least +20 DEG C. The novel lubricating composition is particularly useful with tetrafluoroethane in refrigeration and air-conditioning applications. As such, the present invention also provides a composition for use in refrigeration and air-conditioning comprising: (a) tetrafluoroethane; and (b) a sufficient amount to provide lubrication of at least one polyoxyalkylene glycol having a cap of fluorinated alkyl group on at least one end thereof. The lubricant has a molecular weight of about 300 to about 3,000, a viscosity of about 5 to about 150 centistokes at 37 DEG C., and a viscosity index of at least 20. The lubricant is miscible in combination with the tetrafluoroethane in the range between about -40 DEG C. and at least about +20 DEG C.

The present invention provides a novel lubricating composition comprising polybutylene glycol having a cap of a fluorinated alkyl group on at least one end thereof. The composition has a molecular weight between about 300 and about 4,000, and a viscosity of about 5 to about 150 centistokes at 37 DEG C. The composition is miscible in combination with refrigerant. As such, the present invention provides a composition for use in compression refrigeration and air-conditioning comprising: (a) a refrigerant selected from the group consisting of hydrofluorocarbon, hydrochlorofluorocarbon, fluorocarbon, and chlorofluorocarbon; and (b) a sufficient amount to provide lubrication of at least one polybutylene glycol having a cap of a fluorinated alkyl group on at least one end thereof.
Abstract:
The preparation of carbon fluoride and carbon fluoride chloride from a graphite intercalate is described. Treatment of group V-A pentahalide intercalates of graphite with fluorine or fluorine/chlorine gas mixtures at a temperature of about 300°C results in the production of highly fluorinated CFx: x 1 or (CyFxClz)n: x 1.0, z 0.1, y = 1. In the process, carbon fluoride or carbon fluoride chloride can be prepared from a highly ordered graphitic carbon at a temperature substantially lower than that of the decomposition temperature of the product, CFx or (CyFxClz)n. In particular, carbon fluoride or carbon fluoride chloride is prepared from a group V-A pentahalogen intercalate and fluorine gas or fluorine/chlorine gas mixtures at temperatures in the order of 250-300°C. The process provides a controlled, reproducible method of preparing a carbon fluoride or carbon fluoride chloride material from a graphite feedstock having fluorine-to-carbon ratios of 1 or greater from the pentahalide compound and fluorine gas or fluorine/chlorine gas mixtures at temperatures substantially removed from the decomposition temperature of the final product, thus eliminating the potential of an explosive reaction or the formation of unstable by-products.
