Abstract: A method for the catalytic gas-phase oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid in a contact tubular solid bed reactor at elevated temperature on catalytically active oxides with a conversion of the acrolein on a single pass of >/= 95%, in which the reaction temperature in the flow direction along the contact tube in a first reaction zone from entry of the exit reaction gases containing the reactants into the contact tube until a conversion of the acrolein of 20 to 40% is achieved is 260 to 300 DEG C and in which subsequently thereto the reaction temperature is decreased abruptly or in successive steps or continuously along the contact tube until an acrolein conversion of >/= 95% is achieved by a total of 5 to 40 DEG C with the proviso that the reaction temperature in this second reaction zone is not less than 240 DEG C.
