Abstract: A flake-form (leaf) two-phase pigment consists of a core with a haematite structure of composition AlxFe2-xO3, in which x has a value of 0.02 to 0.5, and an outer layer with a spinel structure of composition AlyFe3-yO4+z, in which y has values from 0.03 to 0.75 and z has values from 0 to 0.5. The pigments can be prepared by a hydrothermal treatment of AlxFe2-xO3 pigment flakes (where x is from 0.02 to 0.5) in the presence of a reducing agent which is dissolved in the aqueous phase.

Abstract: Flaky mica pigments coated with metal oxides are prepared by oxidizing vaporizable metal carbonyls to metal oxides with oxygen at an elevated temperature in the presence of mica flakes which are kept in motion. The amount of carbonyls introduced into the reaction zone does not exceed 5% by volume of the amount of other gases introduced. The coated mica pigments are employed as pigments in surface coatings, plastics and glasses.

Abstract: Prodn. of anhydrous Na dithionite (I) by reacting SO2 with Na formate and NaOH in aq. -alcoholic medium, is now carried out in presence of alkali and/or ammonium salts of oxalic acid and/or EDTA. Pref. the concn. of chelating agent at the end of reaction is not below 0.001 g./l. Decomposition of (I) induced by metal ions (esp. Fe, Cr and Ni, introduced with the reactants or generated by corrosion of the reactor) is inhibited by the chelating agents.
