Abstract: The present invention provides a method of anionic synthesis of stable macrocyclic polymers that are compounded to form vulcanizable elastomeric compounds exhibiting reduced hysteresis properties. Cyclic organometallic compounds containing divalent metal atoms of Groups IIA and IIB of the Periodic System are employed as initiators of anionic polymerization of conjugated diene, vinyl aromatic and/or triene monomers. Coupling of the living ends of the resulting macrocyclic polymers or copolymers with a coupling agent or a coupling agent that is also a functionalizing agent results in stable macrocyclic polymers with improved hysteresis properties.

Abstract: An acyclic alkane soluble anionic polymerization initiator includes a mixture of from about 90 to about 10 parts by weight of a lithio amine having the general formula A1Li and from about 10 to about 90 parts by weight of at least one other lithio amine having the general formula A2Li. A1 and A2 are selected from the dialkyl, alkyl, cycloalkyl and dicycloalkyl amine radicals and cyclic amine radicals. There is also provided a method of forming a mixture of anionic polymerization initiators, a functionalized polymer and a method of forming a functionalized polymer.

Abstract: An anionic polymerization initiator includes the C-lithio reaction product of an organolithium compound and a tertiary-amino allyllithium or a tertiary-amino xylyllithium. When used in an anionic polymerization, a functional group from the initiator is incorporated onto the head of the growing polymer and a lithium atom is incorporated at the "living" end of the polymer chain prior toquenching. The initiator may be used to polymerize a monomer(s) including diolefin monomers, monovinyl aromatic monomers and trienes, and the living ends of the polymers are effectively maintained even at temperatures of up to 300.degree.F and higher. Such polymers exhibit an increased efficiency in coupling termination reactions, and products prepared from such polymers exhibit improved hysteresis characteristics. Products such as tires and the like can be prepared from such polymers and from vulcanizable elastomer compositions employing the polymers.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the dispersion copolymerization of 35 to 70% by weight of vinyl substituted aromatic monomer and 30 to 65% by weight of conjugated diene monomer comprising carrying out the copolymerization in a reaction mixture containing a liquid aliphatic linear hydrocarbon dispersing medium, an anionic catalyst system, and a block copolymer dispersing agent comprising at least two polymer blocks wherein at least one of the polymer blocks is soluble in the dispersing medium and at least another of the polymer blocks is insoluble in the dispersing medium and the dispersing agent acts to disperse a random copolymer of vinyl substituted aromatics and conjugated dienes formed in the presence of the dispersing agent.

Abstract: An anionic initiator system formed by the reaction product of: (1) an organolithium compound with (2) the reaction product of (a) a heterocyclic ring containing a secondary amine and (b) diisopropenyl benzene, is employed to anionically initiate polymerization and to produce an elastomeric polymer containing heterocyclic functional sites incorporated at the head of the polymer chain. These polymers are compounded to exhibit reduced hysteresis over conventionally prepared polymers. Methods are also provided for preparing the functionalized polymers and elastomeric rubbers having reduced hysteresis.

Abstract: A method for preparing a diene polymer or copolymer having increased amounts of 1,2-microstructure is provided.
