Abstract: The growth of micro-organisms in an aqueous medium is inhibited by adding to said medium a composition comprising:-(A) methylene bisthiocyanate; (B) a dispersant having the formula R-O-(R1C2H3O)xH, wherein x is an integer from 1 to 20, R is a straight or branched-chain alkyl-substituted phenyl group or a straight or branched-chain alkyl group, the said alkyl substituent or alkyl group containing from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl radical; and (C) at least one N,N-dimethylamide having the formula wherein R11 is a hydrogen atom or a saturated or unsaturated alkyl group containing from 1 to 22 carbon atoms which is either unsubstituted or hydroxy-substituted, the composition containing the methylene bisthiocyanate (A) in a proportion of from 5 to 50%, preferably 20 to 40%, the dispersant (B) in a proportion of from 5 to 40%, preferably 10 to 20%, and the dimethylamide or dimethylamides (C) in a proportion of 10 to 90%, preferably 45 to 65%, all the percentages being by weight of the total (A) + (B) + (C) content of the composition.ALSO:An antimicrobial composition comprises (A) methylene bisthiocyanate; (B) a dispersant having the formula R-O-(R1C2H3O)xH, wherein x is an integer from 1 to 20, R is a straight or branched-chain alkyl-substituted phenyl group or a straight or branched-chain alkyl group, the said alkyl substituent or alkyl group containing from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl radical; and (C) at least one N,N-dimethylamide having the formula: wherein R11 is a hydrogen atom or a saturated or unsaturated alkyl group containing from 1 to 22 carbon atoms which is either unsubstituted or hydroxy-substituted, the composition containing the methylene bisthiocyanate (A) in a proportion of from 5 to 50%, preferably 20 to 40%, the dispersant (B) in a proportion of from 5 to 40%, preferably 10 to 20%, and the dimethylamide or dimethylamides (C) in a proportion of 10 to 90%, preferably 45 to 65%, all the percentages being by weight of the total (A) + (B) + (C) content of the composition. The composition may be employed for inhibiting the growth of microorganisms on wood, hides, leather, and organic cellulosic substances.ALSO:Fungal growth on wet or dewatered pulp, and slime in pulp and paper mills is inhibited, wet felts and alum systems are protected, and fungus-resistant paper and paperboard are made by treatment with a composition comprising (A) methylene bisthiocyanate; (B) a dispersant having the formula R-O-(R1C2H3O)xH, wherein x is an integer from 1 to 20, R is a straight or branched-chain alkyl-substituted phenyl group or a straight or branched-chain alkyl group, the said alkyl substituent or alkyl group containing from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl radical; and (C) at least one N, N-dimethylamide having the formula: wherein R11 is a hydrogen atom or a saturated or unsaturated alkyl group containing from 1 to 22 carbon atoms which is either unsubstituted or hydroxy-substituted, the composition containing the methylene bisthiocyanate (A) in a proportion of from 5 to 50%, preferably 20 to 40%, the dispersant (B) in a proportion of from 5 to 40%, preferably 10 to 20%, and the dimethylamide or dimethylamides (C) in a proportion of 10 to 90%, preferably 45 to 65% all the percentages being by weight of the total (A) + (B) + (C)content of the composition.
