    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submergible surface. The method contacts the submergible surface with an effective amount of at least one amide to inhibit bacterial adhesion to the submergible surface.     Abstract: A composition for controlling biofouling of an aqueous system comprises at least one sulphonamide in an amount to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submergible surface or a submerged surface within the aqueous system. The sulphonamide has the formula (I) R3-SO2-NR1R2 wherein: R1 and R2 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, cyclopentyl or cyclohexyl or NR1R2 together form a 5-8 membered heterocyclic ring of formula 2; X is O, NH, or CH2; R4 is methyl, hydroxymethyl or hydroxyethyl; n is 0 to 3; R3 is alkyl, perfluoroalkyl or Ar-R5; Ar is phenylenyl or napthylenyl and R5 is alkyl provided that when R1 and R2 are both H, R3 is not Ar-R5 where Ar is a phenylenyl and R5 is methyl.
