Abstract: 1453969 Continuous casting CONCAST AG 4 Dec 1973 [5 Dec 1972] 56214/73 Heading B3F [Also in Division G3] A steel casting 3, withdrawn (e.g. at more than 1 m./min.) from a cooled mould 1 along a guideway 4, is subjected, in a zone 6 extending along at least a part of the guideway, to a gaseous medium at a pressure corresponding substantially to the ferrostatic pressure of the casting core until the casting has fully solidified, the medium being principally steam generated by spraying the surface of the casting 3 with water, any deviations in the steam pressure from that required being compensated for and whenever the pressure falls below requirements it is restored by admitting compressed air to the zone. When the steam pressure is excessive, the level of unevaporated water collected in compartments 24-27 of a pressure chamber 20 (e.g. constructed as in Specification 1,398,891) is lowered. The apparatus described is similar to that of Specification 1,453,841, but the relative pressures in the compartments 24-27 are not determined by valves interconnecting adjacent compartments but by a pressure gauge 62 at each compartment which generates a signal at three pressure levels; i.e. to open a motorized valve 33 when maximum permissible pressure is attained; to open an electromagnetic valve 60 for the introduction of compressed air from a reservoir 52 charged by a compressor 50 when a maximum pressure obtains; and to close both valves 33 and 60 when an average pressure is signalled. The motorized valve 33 is also operated by a gauge sensing the level in a compartment of the pressure chamber to release excess water and scale and is overridden by the pressure gauge 62, if maximum pressure obtains, even with no water present. The gas pressure arrangement may extend up as far as the mould 1. Specifications 1,354,758 and 1,112,017 are referred to.
