Abstract: A pressed article (I) is based upon pyrogenically produced silicon dioxide having a pore volume of 0.5-1.8 ml/g. Independent claims are included for: (i) the production of (I) by mixing pyrogenically produced silicon dioxide with methylhydroxyethylcellulose, wax and polyethylene glycol and water followed by extrusion, optionally cutting the extrudate to a desired length, drying at 70-150 degrees C and heating at 400-1200 degrees C for up to 10 hours; (ii) a supported catalyst (II) comprising (I) for the production of vinylacetate monomer, that contains palladium (Pd) and/or Pd compounds and alkali compounds; gold (Au) and/or Au compound (Pd/alkali/Au system) or cadmium (Cd) and/or Cd compounds (Pd/alkali/Cd system) or barium (Ba) and/or Ba compounds (Pd/alkali/Ba system) or Pd, alkali compounds and mixture of Au and/or Cd and/or Ba; and (iii) the production of the catalyst support (II) by soaking, spraying, condensing, dipping or precipitating the Pd, Au, Cd and/or Ba compounds onto (I), optionally reducing the metal, washing to remove the resulting chloride content, impregnating with alkali acetate or alkali compound that is converted under reaction conditions at least partially to alkali acetate.

Abstract: A process for the alkylation of aromatic substrates under supercritical or near-critical reaction conditions is described. In particular, a method for performing Friedel-Crafts alkylation reactions is disclosed under those conditions. Friedel-Crafts reactions may be effected using a heterogeneous catalyst in a continuous flow reactor containing a supercritical or near-critical reaction medium. Selectivity of product formation can be achieved by varying one or more of temperature, pressure, catalyst, flow rates and also by varying the ratios of aromatic substrate to alkylating agent.

Abstract: Pyrogenic mixed oxides with specified properties based on at least two of the components from aluminum oxide and silicon, titanium or zirconium dioxides, except for SiO2/Al2O3 systems with more than 75 wt.% SiO2, are used as support materials for catalysts based on palladium and alkali compounds plus gold and/or cadmium and/or barium. Supported catalysts in which the active components are palladium and/or Pd compounds and alkali compounds plus gold (Pd/alkali/Au system) or cadmium (Pd/alkali/Cd system) or barium (Pd/alkali/Ba system), or Pd, alkali compounds and mixtures of Au and/or Cd and/or Ba. The support materials for these catalysts comprise pyrogenic mixed oxides with any combination of at least 2 components selected from SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2 and ZrO2 and containing less than 1 wt.% other components, except for SiO2-Al2O3 mixed oxides with more than 75 wt.% SiO2. The pelleted support materials show a bulk density of 250-1500 g/l, an outside diameter of 0.8-25 mm, a BET surface of 5-400 m /g, a pore volume of 0.2-1.8 ml/g and a breaking strength of 5-350 N. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a process for the production of catalysts from mixed oxide pellets as described, by impregnation, spraying, vapor deposition, dip-treatment or precipitation with Pd, Au, Cd and/or Ba compounds, optional reduction of reducible metal compounds, washing to remove any chloride, and impregnation with alkali acetate or with alkali compounds which are converted into acetate under the conditions used for vinyl acetate monomer production; (b) an alternative process involving impregnation of the support with a basic solution and a solution containing Au and Pd salts, washing to remove chloride, reduction of precipitated compounds, drying and impregnation with alkali acetate etc. as in (a).

Abstract: Moldings based on silica having a hollow cylindrical configuration with internal reinforcing stays or spokes leading from an inner wall of a hollow cylinder to the center of the molding or in the form of miniliths having passageway channels therethrough, are produced by homogenizing silica with methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, wax and/or polyethylene glycol. Water and optionally aqueous alkaline ammonia solution are added, and the mixture is subjected to kneading and forming, extruding, optionally cutting the extrudate to the desired length by means of a cutting device, drying at a temperature from 20 to 150° C., and annealing for a period from 30 minutes to 10 hours at a temperature of 400 to 1200° C. The moldings can be used as catalyst supports for the production of unsaturated esters from olefins, organic acids and oxygen in the gas phase and and can be used in particular for the production of vinyl acetate monomer.

Abstract: Mouldings based on pyrogenic silicon dioxide with a pore volume of 0.5 to 1.8 ml/g are prepared by homogenising pyrogenic silicon dioxide with methylhydroxyethyl cellulose, wax and polyethylene glycol with the addition of water, which then is subject to a compounding and shaping process, and is extruded. The extrudant is dried at a temperature of 70 to 150.degree.C, and conditioned for a period of 30 minutes to 10 hours at a temperature of 400 to 1200.degree.C. These mouldings may be used as catalysts or as catalyst supports, for the preparation of vinyl acetate monomer, the hydration of ethylene and the hydration of propylene.
