Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for selecting resources for direct device to device (D2D) communications in a cellular communication network. Preferably, resources for the direct D2D communications are selected to minimize, or at least substantially reduce, interference that results from the direct D2D communications in the cellular communication network. In general, either an uplink resource or a downlink resource of the cellular communication network is selected for a direct D2D communication link between a first wireless device and a second wireless device in order to minimize, or at least substantially reduce, interference caused to a third wireless device that uses the same uplink and downlink resources in the same and/or a neighboring cell of the cellular communication network.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the handling of context of data packet flows. As mentioned, there is a need of a coordination mechanism for the transfer of context for flows that belong to the same session. One object with the invention is to offer a coordination mechanism for the handling of context associated to flows that belong to the same session. The above-mentioned object is achieved by a context procedure, in which the total context for a session is divided into one common context and one dynamic context per IP flow. The common context is handled by a centralized control node, such as a Midcom Agent, and the dynamic context is handled by a middlebox associated to an access router. The context transfer procedures for the two types of contexts are coordinated so that an unambiguous session control is maintained.

Abstract: When UMTS is part of IP end-to-end communication, there must exist means for UMTS to be able to provide the required Quality of Service (QoS) for applications running over IP. Hence there is a need for a translation function for translation between IP QoS parameters and UMTS QoS attributes. This translation is not trivial because of several reasons. First, the number of QoS parameters in the IP level and the UMTS level are different. Second, definitions of parameters at the two levels are different. Keeping these factors in view, the present invention provides for a method for translation of IP QoS parameters to UMTS QoS attributes, and another method for translation of UMTS QoS attributes to IP QoS parameters. This translation will enable spectrum efficient UMTS bearers to be set up for applications running over IP. This will also make negotiation of services possible between an entity at the IP level and the UMTS network. These methods are placed in both the User Equipment as well as the Gateway of the UMTS network.

Abstract: A method of retrieving candidate access router discovery (CARD) information in a user terminal which is present in a many access systems. CARD information is exchanged on an IP control plane between access routers in the access systems, but the user terminal has no IP control plane. In accordance with the invention CARD protocol information is translated into L2 information messages which are transmitted to the user terminal either as extensions to the conventional protocol used for bearer service set up between the user terminal and an access router or as extensions to the conventional protocol used by the individual access system for broadcasting of its system characteristics. In the former case the translated CARD information is transmitted on an L2 bearer service between the current access router and the user terminal and in the latter case the translated information is broadcasted by each access router. The invention also relates to a radio access router and a terminal. (FIG. 3 for publication).

Abstract: Link capacity sharing and packet scheduling normally reside in the Internet protocol router (20) and cutoff parameters are forwarded to a call admission control unit (22) from a control unit (21), which accepts or rejects new flows based on the parameters. For each requested new flow, the traffic class is determined so that admission control can be performed and accepted packets are forwarded to an output port buffer (23) for scheduling to the output port scheduler (25), where the output link is bandwidth allocated into common and dedicated parts, the latter for elastic traffic only. Independent claims are included for a link capacity sharing device and for a method for determining a steady distribution of a Markov chain of dynamics in a network link.

Abstract: A method for filtering and gating data flow in a QoS connection between a remote host and user equipment in a packet date network using policy control mechanisms includes a remote host initiating an application in an application server and a corresponding session between the remote host and the user equipment ("UE") via the application server. The UE requests, to a gateway support node ("GGSN") of the network, establishment of a network bearer service between the UE and the remote host. A corresponding policy control function ("PCF") in a policy server receives, from the application server, filtering data derived from session data received by the application server during the session. The GGSN interrogates the corresponding PCF in the policy server to initialize a gate using policy control filtering data at the GGSN. The gate then filters the data flow in the QoS connection according to the policy control filtering data.
