    Abstract: In a telecommunication system that generates more than one type of communication data stream, in which each data stream exhibits a distinctive data transfer format, bandwidth utilization is improved by first reformatting the different data tansfer formats so that all of the data is compatible with a common data transfer protocol, for example, the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) protocol. The communication data and the corresponding control data, required to maintain communication data alignment, are multiplexed into a single data stream which is then transmitted over a common telecommunication channel to a receiving station.

    Abstract: The bandwidth utilization and transmission efficiency associated with the point-to-point transportation of internet protocol (IP) data packets in a network environment is improved by employing asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) adaption layer two (AAL2) minicells as a bearer. Bandwidth utilization and transmission efficiency may be further enhanced by mapping one or more data fields from the header portion of the IP data packets into one or more look-up tables and then transporting the look-up table addresses in the AAL2 minicell headers rather than the data associated with the one or more data fields in the IP data packet headers.

    Abstract: Transportation of low bit rate, circuit emulation data over an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) connection is improved by packetizing the circuit emulation data into short packets in accordance with a packetization clock. The packetization clock is derived as a function of the ATM cell shaping clock. The short packets are then multiplexed together into a single ATM connection and transported to a receiving unit in accordance with an ATM cell shaping clock. The circuit emulation data is then extracted at the receiving unit and forwarded to the corresponding circuit emulation connection at the appropriate service rate, which is recovered based on ATM connection characteristics.

    Abstract: In the area of network provisioning, there is a problem of selecting a suitable traffic-provisioning model for large networks due to the high management complexity of the resource-efficient trunk model and the poor bandwidth efficiency of the easy-to-configure hose model. The invention is based on the idea of partitioning at least part of the network into multi-node clusters, and defining traffic limitations on at least two levels, including the intra-cluster level and the inter-cluster level, where the traffic limitations include one or more node-to-cluster traffic limitations for inter-cluster traffic. Subsequently, cluster-based provisioning of the network is performed based on the traffic limitations. The novel node-to-cluster limitations proposed by the invention are preferably applied in a cluster-based trunk or hose model on the inter-cluster level. In other words, for the description of the inter-cluster traffic (traffic between the clusters) cluster-based trunk or hose models can be used, preferably depending on the available information about the traffic. The cluster-based provisioning makes it possible to find a trade-off between management complexity and overprovisioning.

    Abstract: Codec rate adaptation for wireless circuit-switched voice communications routed through a packet-based network. A Mobile Station (MS) preferably with Circuit Switched services participating in a voice communication with a distant terminal transmits an initial CMR identifying an initial maximum speech coding rate selected as a function of a downlink radio quality. At each intermediate network node, one or more operational parameters are determined by using an Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) protocol. When a CMR is received at each network node, if the operational parameters are not within a predetermined range suitable for the transmission of speech packets through the network using the initial maximum speech coding rate the maximum speech coding rate identified in the CMR is reduced as a function of the operational parameters and then forwarded toward the distant terminal.
