Abstract: The invention concerns a method of producing pig iron, non-ferrous metal alloys, ferrochromium carbides or carbon-free ferrochromium and synthetic blast furnace slag using residues of incinerated waste or slag containing metal oxides. According to the invention the materials used in waste-incineration, such as for example light fractions obtained from vehicle shredders and blast furnace dusts, are (1) oxidised at least partially and then reduced, with the deposition of non-ferrous metals or alloys. The oxidic slag phase, depleted of metals or alloys, is then (3) mixed with liquid steelworks slag, optionally with the further addition of blast furnace dusts, whereupon, as the viscosity of the steelworks slag is reduced, raw steel is extracted, and (4) the remaining slag portion is subjected to further reduction, producing pig iron and possibly ferrochromium alloys. The resultant synthetic blast furnace slag is then discharged.

Abstract: Metal oxide-containing waste material is dried and preheated before being fed into a reactor (3) where it is melted and oxidised to produce a slag and a metal bath. The slag is then subjected to a two stage redn. pressure as it flows into an iron bath reactor (4) and then an iron bath calcinator (10). In the reactor, scrap or CO/CO2 is fed in to reduce mainly non-ferrous metals which form a bath which is subjected to segregation melting technique. A raw bronze melt is removed from the bottom of the vessel and recycled to the first reactor. In the second redn. stage, CaCO3, CaO and C and optionally O2 is fed into the vessel to reduce the FeO in the slag ad produce a pig iron melt.

Abstract: Refuse incineration slag is fed into a first heating chamber (2) and is melted there under oxidising conditions. Hence the melt is led into a second heating chamber (3) where heavy metal components are reduced into their metallic form, after which the melt is led into a third heating chamber (4). In each chamber the heavy metals present in metallic form are sedimented. The heavy metals sedimented in the third chamber (4) are continuously fed back into one of the preceding chambers (2,3) for collection and withdrawal. The heating chambers are connected to one another by means of passages (17,33). The chambers (3,4) have a bottom sloping towards the chamber (2) which incorporates a heavy-metal collecting pit (11).

Abstract: In a process for dechroming, and/or depleting the MgO content of, steel slags, oxygen is introduced into the liquid steel slag to an extent sufficient for converting iron quantitatively to iron oxide and at least 5% by weight of the iron oxide contained in the slag to iron-III-oxide. The oxidized slag obtained solidifies and is disintegrated, whereupon the paramagnetic portions formed are magnetically isolated and separated from the dechromed slag.
