    Abstract: A display device comprises a cathode and a permanent magnet. A two dimensional array of rows and columns of channels extends between opposite poles of the magnet for receiving electrons from the cathode. A screen has a plurality of phosphor pixels each corresponding to a different channel and each comprising a plurality of sub-pixels facing the side of the magnet remote from the cathode. Grid electrode means is disposed between the cathode means and the magnet. A plurality of pairs of anodes are disposed between the magnet and the screen and extending parallel to the columns of channels. Each pair corresponds to a different column of channels and each pair has first and second anodes extending along opposite sides of the corresponding column of channels. Address means supplies control signals to the grid electrode means to selectively control flow of electrons from the cathode through each channel to the corresponding pixel. An anode drive circuit supplies anode drive signals to the first and second anodes respectively. The anode drive circuit comprises bias means for generating an acceleration component of each anode drive signal for accelerating electrons through the channels, deflection means for generating a deflection component of each anode drive signal for deflecting electrons emerging from each channel towards different sub-pixels of the corresponding pixel, and correction means for varying the deflection component to align the deflected electron beams with the corresponding sub-pixels.

    Abstract: An electron source, e.g. for a flat panel display, comprises a permanent magnet 102,104 having channels extending between opposite poles. The internal surfaces of the channels are conductive. A cathode (204, fig 2) is located at a first pole of the magnet, at one end of the channels. Each channel within the magnet has a plurality of perforations 106 located on a surface of the permanent magnet. A potential applied between the cathode and the conductive internal surfaces of the channels causes electrons to be received into the channels Each perforation 106 gives rise to a null field region where electrons collect. An electron beam for guidance towards a target can be extracted from the null field region 602 by applying an electric field over the perforation. A variety of kinds of cathode are described, including line filament cathodes and micromachined cathodes.

Image scanning apparatus in the display system comprises photo-detection means optically coupled to the display screen for generating an image signal on detection of any light from the scanned picture reflected back into the display screen by an external article and subsequently internally reflected within the display screen. Storage means stores the image signal detected by the photo-detection means.
