Abstract: A termination structure for a cable connector having a pair of differential wire pairs and an associated ground wire utilizes a series of nests, or solder cups, that have their dimensions tailored to maintain a desired level of electrical performance. These nests are also arranged in a configuration to maintain the aforementioned electrical performance, and also position the ground and signal conductors of the cable in the termination area in the same position and orientation as they take in the cable.

Abstract: A connector is formed with a metal shell for use as a shield of the connector. The shell has a pair of tab members formed along its front face that are stamped to provide two metal contact points. These tabs are engaged by metal contact arms formed on a shield of an opposing connector. The metal to metal contact that results from the tab members decreases wear and abrasion and also serves as a conductive connection between the two connector shields.

Abstract: A circuit card connector (20) utilizes flexible circuitry (64) and a card-engagement assembly (50) which applies a normal force to the contact pads (34) of the circuit card (30). The connector includes two opposing connector end portions (40) and a card-engagement assembly (50) extending therebetween, the card-engagement assembly (50) including two opposing spring members (53) which are seated upon a pair of fulcrums. The spring members (53) are spaced apart from each other on opposite sides of a centerline of a card-receiving slot (80) of the connector (20). The spring members (53) have lower leg portions (55) and upper contact arm portions (57). The leg portions (55) of the spring members (153) project into the card-receiving slot (80) such that an insertion edge (36) of the circuit card (30) will impinge thereupon and cause them to spread apart, which in turn, will cause the contact arm portions (57) of the spring members (53) to rotate around their associated fulcrums so that the contact arm portions (57) will contact and exert a normal force upon contact pads (34) located on opposing sides of the circuit card (30) near the circuit card insertion edge (36).

Abstract: A connector that is particularly suitable for use in high speed data transmission is provided in the form of a plug connector that may be terminated to the end of a high speed cable. The connector has a plurality of terminals for terminating to respective signal wires, ground wires and power wires of the cable, and also has an additional terminal that serves to detect and identify status information about the cable to circuits on a circuit board to which the cable is connected thorough the plug connector and a mating receptacle connector. This detection terminal is shorted to another terminal of the connector, preferably a power ground, or return, terminal. The shorting is done with an electronic component that modifies the voltage passing from the shorted terminal through the detection terminal. The modified voltage may be easily read on the circuit board to determine the status of the cable (such as the speed of the cable) or an electronic device attached thereto.

Abstract: A carrier web (80) of sheet metal material joining stamped and formed components (24) of an electrical connector is disclosed. The component is carried through the stamping and forming process by the carrier web of the sheet metal material. The component is stamped and formed from the material such that at least a portion (48, 50, 58, 60) of the component projects from one side of the original plane of the sheet metal material. The carrier web is formed into a three-dimensional configuration (90, 102) to reduce the spacing between adjacent components. A portion of the web may project a sufficient distance from the one side of the original plane of the sheet metal material to protect the projecting portion of the component during subsequent manufacturing operations on the component. A retaining structure (120, 122, 124) may also be provided to retain the components at a predetermined spacing on the carrier web. A method of manufacturing the carrier web is also disclosed.
