Abstract: A bidirectional voltage translator couples signals between ports 106,110 which have different voltage signal levels, for example 3 V and 5 V ports in a radiotelephone and an attached accessory. When an asserted signal arrives at port 106, open-drain buffer 212 passes the signal to the port 110 while buffer 214 disables the open-drain buffer 213. Similarly, when an asserted signal arrives at port 110, open-drain buffer 213 passes the signal to the port 106 while buffer 215 disables the open-drain buffer 212. If asserted signals arrive at both ports at the same time, then both main buffers 212,213 are disabled. The propagation delay of the main buffers may be longer than those of the controlling buffers 214,215. In an alternative embodiment, the data direction may be controlled by a state machine (figures 4-6) based on a PLD, microprocessor or flip-flop circuit.

Abstract: A portable electronic device has detachable main and auxiliary battery packs 101, 102, the auxiliary 101 battery preferably having a greater capacity than the main battery 101. A main battery switch 424, which is controlled by a detector 422 sensing the voltage of the auxiliary battery 102, and an auxiliary battery switch 420 (in the form of a diode 500, Fig.5) control energisation of the device which is initially powered by the auxiliary battery 102 until the voltage of the latter falls below a threshold, whereupon the switch 424 closes to power the device from the main battery 101. The auxiliary battery 102 may be detached while it is powering the device, whereupon the main battery switches in substantially without interruption of the operational state of the device. The main battery can similarly be detached while it is powering the device, whereupon the auxiliary battery takes over, the threshold voltage being above the minimum operating voltage of the device. Connection of an external power source 430 causes the device to be powered therefrom while the batteries are also charged from source 430 via a current regulator 470, 472. A controller 306 senses battery presence through a thermistor switch 446 coupled to thermistors 406, 414 in the batteries. If both batteries are present, the main battery is first fully charged, then the auxiliary battery, and then both batteries are maintenance charged. If a non-fully charged main battery is replaced during charging of the auxiliary battery, charging is switched to the main battery. The device is preferably a radiotelephone, but may alternatively be a lap top computer, camcorder, pager, two way radio, or personal digital assistant.

Abstract: A device (100) includes detachable main and auxiliary batteries (101, 102) and a circuit (310) for discharging and charging the batteries (101, 102). Discharging is accomplished by an auxiliary switch (420) that connects the auxiliary battery (102) to power the device (100), a detector (422), and a main switch (424) that connects the main battery (101) to power the device (100), without interruption, when the auxiliary battery (102) drops below a predetermined voltage (508) as determined by a detector (422). Charging is performed by switches (440, 442, 446), an internal charger (444), and a controller (306). When both batteries (101, 102) are attached, the controller (306) uses the switches (440, 442, 446) to select and couple charging current generated by the internal charger (444) to the main battery (101). Once charged, the controller (306) switches to charge the auxiliary battery (102).

Abstract: A blood pressure sensor (12) includes a source of photo-radiation, such as a n array (30) of laser diodes (30A-I). The sensor also includes a two-dimensional, flexible reflective surface (14) . The reflective surface is nominally positioned relative to the radiation source such that the radiation travels in a direction norma l to the reflective surface. The reflective surface is placed adjacent to the location on the patient where the blood pressure data is to be acquired. Radiation from the source is reflected off of the reflective surface onto a two-dimensional array (17) of photo-detectors (18) . Systolic and diastolic blood pressure fluctuations in the patient are translated into deflections of the patient's skin. These deflections cause corresponding deflections in the two dimensional reflective surface. The associated movement of said flexible reflective surface (14) due to blood pulsation causes scattering patterns from said reflective surface to be detected by the two dimensional array (17 ) of photo-detectors (18). The output from the array of photo-detectors is calibrated to blood pressure in mmHg during a calibration procedure to obtain a set of calibration relationships for one or more of the individual detectors. The calibration relationships a re then used during acquisition of blood pressure data to arrive at blood pressure data.

Abstract: A wireless, programmable system for medical monitoring includes a base unit and a plurality of individual wireless, remotely programmable biosensor transceivers. The base unit manages the transceivers by issuing registration, configuration, data acquisition, and transmission commands using wireless techniques. Physiologic data from the wireless transceivers is demultiplexed and supplied via a standard interface to a conventional monitor for display. Initialization, configuration, registration, and management routines for the wireless transceivers and the base unit are also described.
