    Abstract: A base-site (304) combines baseband frequency hopping and fast-synthesizer hopping to produce an economical frequency hopping communication system (300). The base-site (304) combines the fast-synthesizer frequency hopping capability of transmitters (307-309) with baseband frequency hopping to produce a frequency hopping communication system (300) which serves the same number of subscribers served by transmitters (208-213) in a purely baseband hopping communication system (200), but with fewer transmitters (307-309). The implementation of frequency-selective cavities (312-317) having very low loss eliminates the need for wideband hybrid combiners (112-114), which in turn eliminates transmitted-signal power loss experienced in a purely fast-synthesizer frequency hopping communication system (100).

    Abstract: An improved cellular telephone communication system is described having operational steps which prevent a call from being dropped due to a radiotelephone (130) not receiving a handoff instruction from its host base site (115). The system includes a switch controller (122) for determining that the radiotelephone requires a handoff from a first base site coverage area (110) to a second base site coverage area (112) and for communicating a handoff message to the associated first (115) and second base site equipment (119). The first base site equipment then transmits the handoff message to the radiotelephone. If the radiotelephone does not receive the message, it determines that the call has been lost, siezes a signalling channel from the second base site, and requests, via the second base site a call reconnection by transmitting a special message. The second base site then informs the radiotelephone of the handoff instruction and the handoff is completed with a successful reconnection of the call.

    Abstract: In a TDMA cellular network, there is provided a mechanism for shared-carrier frequency-hopping. It comprises: allocating on a frame basis within a reuse diameter to one coverage area during certain timeslot(s) at least one from a pool of TDM-frame-hopped carriers and allocating on a frame basis within that carrier reuse diameter to another coverage area during certain other, substantially non-overlapping timeslot(s) that frame-hopped carrier, all in substantially non-interfering time-synchronism with any proximal reuse of that carrier, whereby the advantages of frequency hopping are obtained. Stated differently, it comprises: at one instant in time, allocating within a reuse diameter to one coverage area at least one of a plurality of hopped carriers and at that same instant in time, allocating within that carrier reuse diameter to another coverage area another of that plurality of hopped carriers, all in time-synchronism with any proximal reuse of that carrier. The control and access carriers may also be included in the hopping pool, causing certain timeslots to be hopped on a sequence different from the others. The pool of hopped carriers is further apportioned among co-located sites into hopping groups, thereby reducing intra-system synchronization requirements. To solve the near/far problem, TDM timeslots bordering hopping boundaries are preferentially allocated to less distant mobile users.

    Abstract: In a TDMA cellular system, there is provided a mechanism for splitting the allocation of time slots within a TDM frame between adjacent coverage areas. There is provided a method of and apparatus for time-allocation of TDMA channels. It is characterized by: periodically allocating some portion of a carrier (19A-24A) of radio traffic to one coverage area during one time interval and periodically allocating some other portion of that same carrier (19B-24B) to another coverage area during a substantially non-overlapping time interval, all in time synchronism with any proximal reuse of that carrier. The distribution of channels in adjacent coverage areas thereby approaches parity (8+8+5 APPROX 8+8+3+3) and the minimum channel capacity per coverage area is enhanced (8+8 => 8+8+3+3; 16 => 22).

    Abstract: The invention provides for path optimization for routing of a communication session in a network having a plurality of core networks (110) coupled to a plurality of access networks (120). Both a core network and an access network perform the path optimization by determining a plurality of possible paths to a plurality of target access points to form a target matrix, determining a corresponding route preference factor for each possible path of the target matrix, and selecting, from the target matrix, a possible path having an optimal route preference factor. An overall or complete path, for routing of the communication session, is then determined either by combining the selected possible paths, or by selecting one possible path as a complete path. The route preference factor, for each possible path, is determined based upon various routing variables, such as quality of service, bandwidth for the communication session, route complexity, interconnect cost, routing cost; resource loading, resource availability, and operator preference for traffic biasing.
