    Abstract: 1,197,036. Monomethylol dicyandiamide ethers. L'OREAL. 19 April, 1967 [19 April, 1966], No. 62497/69. Divided out of 1,197,032. Heading C2C. An ether of the formula (in which R is an alkyl radical) is prepared in the form of a powder or concentrate by adding to its mixture with an alcohol having 1-4 carbon atoms hydrochloric acid in an amount not exceeding 0.5 mol per mol of ether, and optionally evaporating the resulting solution. In a modification of the process the ether is prepared in situ by esterifying monomethyloldicyandiamide in an alcohol of the formula ROH in which R is an alkyl radical, in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The mixture may be heated until dissolution. The concentrates may be used after dilution in acidified water for the treatment of hair. The powders are soluble in water and alcohol and solution thereof may also be used in the treatment of hair.

[Also in Divisions C4 and D1] A composition used in the treatment of hair comprises one or both of monomethylol-urea and monomethylol-thiourea, and a perfume. The composition which may contain 0À2-10% by weight of active compound may be in the form of a solution in water or a mixture of water and alcohol and may be packed in the form of an emulsion, cream, gel or aerosol. The composition may also contain a surfaceactive agent, dye, penetration agent, natural or synthetic resins and an acid catalyst, e.g. phosphoric, sulphuric, acetic, citric, lactic or formic acid or mono-sodium or monopotassium phosphate in an amount capable of bringing the composition to a pH of 1À5-5.
