    Abstract: Method and apparatus for transmitting a signal at a predetermined level of reliability using retransmission of erroneously transmitted frames so as to minimize total transmission energy. The transmitting station evaluates the frame error rate (FER) as a function of energy. Next, the transmitting station determines a combination of initial transmission energies and retransmission energies that will provide the target level of reliability while minimizing the total transmission energy employed in the initial transmission and the retransmissions. The transmitting station transmits a frame with an initial transmission energy. Employing conventional feedback methods the transmitting station is alerted to the occurrence of frame errors at the receiving station. The transmitting station upon notification of a frame error retransmits the frame with an energy determined to minimize the total energy required to transmit the frame with a predetermined level of reliability.

    Abstract: In a wireless communication system (50) a method for combination transmission of packet data and low delay data. In one embodiment a parallel signaling channel provides a message to receivers (56, 58, 60) indicating a target recipient of packet data. The message also identifies the transmission channel used for packet data transmissions. Each receiver may then selectively decode only packets where the message identifies the receiver as a target recipient. The data packets stored in a buffer are ignored if the target recipient is another mobile unit. In one embodiment, the message is sent concurrently with the data packet on a parallel channel. In one embodiment, the message is punctured into the high rate packet data transmission.

    Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for control transmission energy. The present invention describes a closed loop power control system that operates in conjunction with a transmitter using orthogonal transmit diversity. In a first embodiment of the present invention, the receiver evaluates the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the two components of the signal. A weighted sum of these two components emphasizing the weaker of the two signals is generated and used in the generation of the power control commands. In a second embodiment of the present invention, the SNR of the two component signals are calculated and two separate power control commands are generated based on a corresponding one of the calculated SNR values.

A stream of power control commands is formed at the mobile station in accordance with either the first or second received data stream. A power control signal is formed at the mobile station from the first stream of power control commands and transmitted to the base station. A received stream of power control commands is formed from the received power control signal at the base station, and the transmit power levels of the first and second data streams from the base station are controlled in accordance with the received stream of power control commands.
