Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce formatting time when a disk is ejected, in an optical recording medium that allows data rewriting and has several recording layers.
SOLUTION: Background formatting is performed preferentially from, among a plurality of recording layers, a recording layer where user data is last recorded. For example, when compatibility with a reproduction-only device is required at the time of user data recording only on a first recording layer, in an unrecorded area closer to an inner peripheral side than the tail end position of the user data on the first recording layer, all recording layers need to be formatted (dummy data has been recorded). The background formatting is preferentially performed from the recording layer where the user data is last recorded as described above, only a part of the recording layer for last recording can be formatted during disk eject.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a proper reproducing operation on a recordable multilayer disk.
SOLUTION: In the case of transfer from a recording layer having user data recorded therein to a next recording layer, in a transfer destination recording layer, recording is first executed in a guard area, and user data is subsequently executed. Alternatively, when the recording start position of the user data in the transfer destination recording layer is known beforehand, a guard area is formed in the transfer destination recording layer before the user data is recorded. That is, in the case of transfer from the recording layer having the user data recorded therein to the next recording layer, by setting the guard area in the section before the recording position of the user data in the transfer destination recording layer, during the reproducing of the user data, a reproducing signal for reproduction preparation is obtained beforehand.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly discriminate disk sizes. SOLUTION: Disk physical information is read out of the optical disk recorded with the disk physical information on the disk surface of the optical disk, and the optical disk is discriminated in accordance with this disk physical information, while the optical disk is rotated at a standard rotating speed. The speed when the optical disk is rotated at a high speed, according to this discriminated optical disk is limited. The size, etc., of the disk are discriminated by utilizing the disk physical information recorded on the disk or measuring the inertia of the disk or the light reflectivity of the disk and the rotating speed of the disk is controlled to an adequate value or below in accordance with this discrimination output. The diameters and shapes of the mounted optical disks may be discriminated exactly, when the various optical disks, such as the optical disks, having a diameter (8 cm) smaller than those of the optical disks having a standard diameter (12 cm) in addition the optical disks, having a standard diameter or the optical disks having a rectangular shape, are mounted at the device.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data recording medium which has time information of an existing recording medium as well as an address expressed in a binary number and is adaptive to high capacity. SOLUTION: The time information that is expressed in a BCD as a Q channel of a subcode is recorded in an existing CD-ROM and also recorded in a header included in data (Fig. 10A). To that end, a 24-bit address expression part is used. An address expressed in a binary number is recorded at the address expression part included in the header in place of the time information on the BCD (Fig. 10B). Thus, a larger number of addresses can be expressed in comparison with the BCD address expression so as to cope with increase of the disk capacity. In addition, the time of an existing player, etc., can be displayed since the time information is recorded as a subcode.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To relieve a processing load on a control part and to quickly execute transfer processing by discriminating a cache hit at the time of a data transfer request from an external host equipment and transferring and outputting transfer possible data to the equipment without waiting a transfer indication from a system control part. SOLUTION: When the transfer request from a host computer 100 occurs, a system controller 10 executes reception processing of the transfer request. A buffer manager 21 recognizes respective retrieval condition setting parameters in accordance with the indication of a cache search and executes the search. When it is discriminated that a part or whole of data being a transfer request object cannot be transferred from a cache memory 20 by cache hit discrimination, a buffering operation concerning data which cannot be transferred is controlled in execution and also the transfer output of the data to the host equipment is controlled in accordance with that the data becomes transferable by the buffering operation.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase output speed of transfer. SOLUTION: A reproducing device performs seek operation when seek from a host computer is instructed, while performs buffering for a cache memory of continuous data from a finish position of seek operation (F103). After that, when transfer of data read out from a seek finish position is required, buffered data may be transferred (F109).

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk-detecting method in an optical disk apparatus whereby a plurality of kinds of optical disks of different track-scanning densities are easily detected. SOLUTION: The method comprises steps of generating reproduction signals by an optical pickup under tracking servo control to an optical disk rotated with a predetermined revolution number, counting edges of track pits based on a change of the reproduction signals (ST6), detecting a track-scanning density of the optical disk based on a measured count of edges during (n) rotations of the optical disk (ST7), and detecting the kind of the optical disk among a plurality of kinds of optical disks of different track-scanning densities (ST8).

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the optical disk device and optical rotary recording medium by which the accuracy of a clock signal to be used at the time of reading and writing data on a disk is improved. CONSTITUTION:A trial write pit is recorded in a prescribed timing in a trial write area provide in each sector by a recording control circuit 5. In a position information adding circuit 53 and an averaging circuit 54, the trial pit is read out, and position information is detected from a time difference between peaks of the clock signal and a signal of the sum of trial write pits, and moreover, these bits of position information are added by a prescribed number to calculate an average value. Based on this average value, a comparison is made by a comparator circuit 56 with a reference data recorded in a recording position setting circuit 57, and a coarse adjusting signal is generated so as to make this average value a prescribed value. A variation of the average values is calculated by an average deviation circuit 55, and a fine adjusting signal is generated so as to minimize this numerical value of the variation. Timing of the clock signal is adjusted by controlling a PLL circuit 4 with a recording timing adjusting circuit 58 based on the coarse adjusting signal and the fine adjusting signal.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To enhance the reliability of data to be recorded on a disk by correcting a pit position in response to the temp. of the disk. CONSTITUTION:A thermistor layer is electrified by a potential difference detecting circuit of a temp. control part 3 via contacts 9, and the temp. of the disk 6 is obtained by measuring voltages at the contacts 9. Laser light intensity control information corresponding to the temp. of the disk 6 is generated by a laser power control circuit, while laser light emitting timing control information corresponding to the temp. of the disk 6 is generated by a laser light emitting timing control circuit, and they are set in a laser/magnetic head control circuit 20. These bits of information are obtained in proper calculation based on temp. information of the disk 6 by reading out a table recorded with control information measured actually in advance, etc., corresponding to the temp. of the disk 6.
