    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium, using a polyester film having satisfactory productivity which causes little dropout, even when the medium is reproduced after stored for a long time and which has superior data storage performance for digital recording by a helical scanning method such as a DVC-LP tape. SOLUTION: A polyester film having 2 to 5 μm thickness, 2 to 5 nm SRa on one surface A, 0.4 to 0.9% heat shrinkage in both the longitudinal and the width directions at 100 deg.C for 30 minutes and 0.2% or lower as difference of the shrinkage between the longitudinal direction and the width direction is used as the base film. Then the lateral modulus of elasticity and a film thickness are taken respectively as at least 700kg/mm and not exceeding 7μm. Then the film is comprised of at least two layer structure of layers A, B and the thickness of the layer A may be 0.01-3.0μm. Further it is preferable that the layer A and/or the B are the polyethylene 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate. It is preferable further that the layer A contains 0.01-3.0wt.% particles having a mean particle diameter of 0.01-1.0μm.
