    Abstract: Disclosed is a polyester film having a surface layer whose major component is polyester A. Protrusions are formed on the film surface originating from the crystallization of polyester A. The number of protrusions formed on the surface of the film is not less than 5 x 103/mm2, and the ratio N R of the number of protrusions to the number of particles contained in a surface layer forming the surface of the film is not less than 5. Since most of or the whole of the protrusions are formed by utilizing the crystallization of polyester A without relying particles, generation of voids can be prevented and fine and uniform protrusions having excellent chipping resistance and scratch resistance can be formed.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a polyester film for magnetic recording media comprising a coating layer containing fine particles and organic compounds formed on surface A at one side of the polyester film, and fine surface protrusions are formed at a density of 3 x 10 to 1 x 10 porotrusions/mm on surface A. The polyester film satisfies at least one of the following conditions: (a) the mean diameter of the fine surface protrusions is in the range of 5 to 60 nm, and, among the fine surface protrusions, the density of fine surface protrusions with a height of 20 nm or more is 3,000 protrusions/mm2, and (b) the mean diameter of the fine surface protrusions is in the range of 5 to 100 nm, the mean height of the fine surface protrusions is in the range of 5 to 30 nm, and the degree of cohesion of the fine surface protrusion is less than 15%. The present invention also provides a magnetic recording tape that exerts a small amount of wear on an MR head, and thus good traveling durability and a low incidence of dropouts, and a polyester film for magnetic recording media that enables the magnetic tape to be produced.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a biaxially oriented film and a laminated film containing specified organic particles at a content of 0.001 to 20% by weight. The strength when deformed by 10% (S10) of the organic particles is in the range of 3 to 30 kgf/mm2, the thermal decomposition temperature for causing 10% loss in weight thereof is not lower than 350 .degree.C . The weight average diameter thereof is in the range of 0.005 to 5 .mu. m. Since the organic particles have a good affinity with the matrix resin of the film and a good thermal resistance and the hardness of the particles is appropriate, desired protrusions hardly chipped and having an appropriate hardness for hardly scratching a magneticsurface can be formed on a film surface easily and uniformly. Therefore, a film excellent in abrasion resistance and scratch resistance at a high running speed and excellent in running durability can be obtained, which is useful particularly as a base film of a magnetic tape.
