    Abstract: In a method for producing a soft sheet material containing thinned fibers or filaments and a viscoelastic substance, the improvement comprising: (A) applying a mixture of a viscoelastic substance and a temporary filler to a sheet Material containing thinnable fibers or filaments; (B) thinning the thinnable fibers or filaments forming said sheet material; (B') applying temporary filler to said sheet material or relocating said temporary filler applied previously at step (A) within said sheet material, whenever necessary; (C) applying a viscoelastic substance; (D) removing said temporary filler; and (E) napping the sheet, whenever necessary, to thereby obtain a leatherlike sheet Material which, though soft, has good mechanical properties such as high abrasion resistance and high tear strength. A leather-like sheet material is produced which is free from deficiencies such as low abrasion resistance and tear strength even where the thickness is further reduced.

    Abstract: This invention provides an improvement in a spinneret assembly. The assembly comprises superposed rigid, first, second, third and fourth plate members. The first and second plate members partition offf a first and second polymer chamber respectively, from a second and third polymer chamber, respectively. The third plate member partitions off the third polymer chamber from one or more funnel-shaped fourth polymer chambers bored in the fourth plate member. The third plate member has a plurality of holes which are exposed to each fourth polymer chamber. The fourth plate member has at the lowermost end of each fourth polymer chamber an orifice. Holes bored in the second plate member confront the holes of the third plate member, each pair of confronting holes being connected with each other by a pipe. The pipe extends in such manner that a narrow circular path is formed at least around one end portion of the pipe within the hole of the third or second plate member respectively, or within another pipe extending from the hole of the second or third plate member respectively, and the polymer passage formed within the pipe is connected through the narrow circular path to the third polymer chamber. The four plate members form a plurality of series of linked polymer passages, each series having at least one joining point at which two polymer streams join together. At least one of the polymer passages upstream of the joining point has at least one cross section that is narrower than any cross section of the polymer passage downstream of the joining point but upstream of the succeeding joining point, if any, or said at least one polymer passage upstream of the joining point has a length longer than that of the polymer passage downstream of the joining point but upstream of the succeeding joining point, if any. The assembly produces multi ingredient multi-core composite filaments each comprised of at least three polymer phases, and avoids defects in conventional assemblies which produce filaments which are not uniform in thickness and cross section and wherein the number of core polymer ingredients in each filament is limited, etc.

    Abstract: A composite sheet which comprises a fabric impregnated with a high molecular weight elastic polymer and a hardened high molecular weight organic compound, said fabric containing a plurality of naps on the surface formed from the ends of fibers constituting said fabric, each of said naps being a bundle of fibers having a root portion and a tip portion, said root portion in most naps having the shape of a single unitary strand and said tip portion including at least some individually distinct fibers. This sheet has an appearance like that of a high-class napped woolen woven fabric, being deep in color, having smooth touch, bulkiness, water-washable properties, easy-care properties due to its crease resistance and packability, and is especially suitable for clothes.

The core streams discharge into a chamber which converges at an angle Theta of =75 degrees and which is fed with an annular and pref. also an axial stream of the matrix material. Pref. subsidiary passages sheath each core sub-filament in matrix material (co-axial or eccentric). For preparation of multi-core filaments or for manufacture of very fine filaments by subsequently removing the matrix material. Die design maintains stable core and matrix patterns throughout long prodn. runs - the flow path of the core filament streams is almost linear to avoid material hang-up and degradation. Sheathing of each core stream by matrix material avoids internal coalescence of the core streams.

    Abstract: Collagen fiber-like synthetic superfine filament bundles are prepared through a process in which an "islands-in-a-sea" type composite filament is formed from a sea constituent polymeric material and an island constituent polymeric composition consisting of at least two polymers different from each other, at least one of which has a content of 7 to 93 percent based on the composition, the sea constituent is removed for obtaining a bundle of island constituent superfine filaments and then at least one polymer in the resultant superfine filaments is removed in order to obtain the collagen fiber-like synthetic superfine filament bundles.
