Abstract:
A system, method and apparatus for controlling, via a closed-form forward displacement computation, the position and orientation of a movable platform of a parallel mechanism. A movable platform is supported above a base platform by a plurality of parallel support legs such as linear actuators. The dimensions of the base platform and the movable platform, as well as the lengths of the support legs, are provided to a control system. The control system is operative to compute at least one closed-form forward displacement solution (51) of the geometry of polyhedron (an octahedron for the disclosed embodiments) formed by the movable platform, the base platform, and the support legs. The control system determines a final position and orientation of the movable platform by eliminating imaginary roots of the closed-form solutions and roots which would result in discontinuous paths of travel for the movable platform. A novel special 6-6 parallel mechanism (Fig. 12) is also disclosed. The control system is suitable for controlling known 3-3 or 6-3 Stewart platforms in a novel manner, as well as controlling the novel special 6-6 parallel mechanism. The special 6-6 parallel mechanism is distinguished from a general 6-6 by the fact that it is geometrically reducible to an octahedron, and therefore it has a simple geometry, even though its legs possess distinct connections. Also disclosed is a method for reducing the novel special 6-6 parallel mechanism to a Stewart platform equivalent, which is then controlled by the disclosed closed-form forward displacement control system.
Abstract:
Reagents for a liquid-phase immunodiagnostic assay (LIDA) method comprise a first enzyme; a second enzyme; a first agent which is capable of binding with an analyte to form a complex, said agent being attached to one of said first and second enzymes; and a complex-binding agent attached to the remaining enzyme, wherein said first enzyme is capable of interacting with a substrate for said first enzyme together with any necessary additional substrates for said first enzyme to produce a substrate for said second enzyme, and wherein said second enzyme is capable of interacting with said substrate produced by said first enzyme together with any necessary additional substrates, such that occurrence of the second of said interactions is detectable. The reagent optionally further comprises a scavenger substance capable of inactivating the substrate produced by the first enzyme.
Abstract:
A system and method for high resolution gas chromatography involves the use of fused silica open tubular capillary columns (33) having a conductive exterior coating and an arrangement for electrically coupling a power source (21) to the coating to effect direct resistive heating of column (33) while controlling the temperature thereof. The control of temperature is achieved by measuring the resistance of the coating, correlating such resistance with the temperature of column (33), and increasing or decreasing the electrical power supplied to the coating to effect the adjustment in column (33) temperature. Because of the low thermal mass of column (33) and the conductive coating, temperature changes can be readily effected thereby improving the speed of separation and reducing the time interval between resolution of successive samples. The compact nature and low power demands of the system allow it to be operated as a portable unit.
Abstract:
A fluid transfer system, including a channel member (10), adapted for connection between an arterial or venus catheter and an IV fluid administration system. The channel member includes a duct (14) and an access port (20). An adapter (12) including a recessed needle (34) assembly is provided for mounting to the access port of the channel member. A syringe, IV tubing or and evacuated container may be mounted directly to the channel member via the adapter. Safety is substantially enhanced by recessing the needle assembly of the adapter.
Abstract:
Combustion synthesis process using microwave energy. The process uses microwave energy to ignite at least two reactants which are capable of reacting exothermically to produce a reaction product. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, combustion of the reactants is also controlled using microwave energy.
